Bush: US deaths in Iraq not in vain as toll tops 9/11

CRAWFORD, United States (AFP) - US President George W. Bush said that combat deaths in Iraq are not in vain, as that toll surpassed the number killed on September 11, 2001.

"The president believes every life is precious and grieves for each one that is lost," Scott Stanzel, a White House spokesman, said.

The number of US soldiers killed in Iraq rose to 2,976, surpassing the September 11 toll of 2,973 victims.

"The war on terror is a long struggle and we will be fighting violent jihadists to secure peace for many years to come and the call of this generation is to take the fight to the terrorists to prevent an attack on our nation greater than the scale of 9/11," the spokesman said at the president's ranch where Bush is spending the end of the year.

The US death total is now just about the number of deaths from the sinking of the Titanic and the Lusitania combined. I haven't seen any headlines to this effect though.
