Miami police chief's son sentenced in NY drug case
<snip>

"The son of Miami police Chief John Timoney was sentenced Wednesday to 18 months in federal prison for trying to buy 400 pounds of marijuana from an undercover agent in 2005.

Sean Timoney, 26, pleaded guilty in December 2005 to giving an undercover Drug Enforcement Administration agent a gym bag filled with about $455,000 in cash as partial payment for what he and a partner believed would be the delivery of 400 pounds of marijuana.

Timoney had faced a maximum of 40 years in prison and a $2 million fine after pleading guilty in U.S. District court to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute marijuana.

After his release from prison, Timoney will be supervised for four years and required to enter a drug treatment program."

<snip>

"Chief Timoney is well-known in law enforcement. He rose through the ranks of the New York Police Department to become a chief and first deputy commissioner. He later became chief of police in Philadelphia before moving to Miami."

6. You are do right, donsu!
I have a major problem with our justice system. If you have money and/or power, you are not subject to the same penalties and treatment.

However, where marijuana is concerned, no one should ever serve even one day of jail time. Marijuana should be legal. Alcohol is so much more dangerous than marijuana. Having alcohol as a legal substance while marijuana is illegal is a MAJOR HYPOCRISY!

Marijuana is a PLANT! No processing involved.

4. No time for marijuana;
18 months for not holding down a real job. I'm sure Dad could have helped with employment.
Planting and tending marijuana is "hard work"; the end dealers are the slackers.
I have no problem with this sentence.
...O...

7. More from the Miami Police Dept:
Gun-plant case ending with 7 cops off to prison

<snip>

"Seven former Miami cops, convicted in a gun-planting conspiracy, must surrender to federal authorities by noon Friday to begin serving prison sentences.

Among them: ex-Lt. Israel ''Izzy'' Gonzalez, 47, whose wife, Lidia, was killed by Rolex robbers in '99 in Perrine. Gonzalez has two sons from a prior marriage, including a teenager battling cancer -- Ewing's sarcoma. Nevertheless, Gonzalez will report to the Federal Correctional Institution in Petersburg, Va. His term is 16 months."

<snip>

"Gonzalez and the others plotted to plant guns in police shootings between '95 and '97, then lied about the circumstances, jurors decided."

<snip>

"Says former Miami U.S. Attorney Marcos Jimenez: ''The prosecution of these officers successfully sent the message that police officers are not above the law, and that they must honor the civil rights of suspects and must also honor our system of justice.'' The Miami Police Department has ''greatly improved'' its policies on police shootings, adds Jimenez, now in private practice."

<snip>

"Jesus ''Jesse'' Aguero received the stiffest term from U.S. District Judge Alan Gold -- 37 months. Arturo Beguiristain got 27 months. Jorge Garcia and ex-Sgt. Jose Quintero also received 16-month sentences. Jorge D. Castello and Oscar Ronda got 13 months."
