I recently spent 10 1/2 months in a grave-sized cell in Syria, unsure why I was there, unsure how to get out. Fear paralyzed my wits when I needed them most. I was beaten and I was tortured and I was constantly scared. Every day I worried that I would never be released, that I would disappear into that concrete grave forever.

Why was I being held? I still don't really know. I am not a terrorist. I am not a member of Al Qaeda. I am a Syrian-born Canadian. A father and a husband. A telecommunications engineer. I have never been in trouble with the police and have always been a good citizen.

2. small story

A iraqi girl in my j-school once gave me a news tip. Her father's best friend an Iraqi...was coming to Canada from the US. He was hassled interagated and beaten by Canadian border guards.

She had a folder with a bellingham police report and everything, but at the last minute all parties except myself chickened out. I left for my internship a couple days later so I couldn't reseach it on my own...these border guards can be spooky people, remember that.

Cause you're so daft...this did happen the man began to argue with them about being hassled for no real reason. And it escalated resulting in his beating.

And it doesn't make sense? Yeah and the cops in Vancouver didn't beat up those three guys in stanley park, and they didn't beat that one guy and put him out back where he froze to death. ANd the freezing road doesn't exsist..yeah no one ever abuses power in Canada...it's amazing here....you must have your head buried so far in the sand you can speak fluent chinese.

If my life is imaginary than we're all in trouble, I just got a full time job as a reporter...yes Glarius - I'm part of the Canadian media, your worst nightmare....a journalist that doens't live in LA LA land. ...he was leaving CANADA for the U.S. Or maybe, as pissed as Canada is about being excluded from the Iraq rebuilding contracts, CANADIAN border guards beating the crap out of anyone crossing over FROM the U.S. (We're loved, everywhere we go! Just ask us!)

Depending on your frame of mind at the time, I would suppose ALL border guards, from any country, can appear pretty creepy ("Your papers, please?"). But apparently, Mr. Arar never even got NEAR a border guard -- Canadian or any other. He was plucked out of the international stopover area because Boosh thinks he has ties to al-Qaeda, al-Jazzera, al-Gore, and a missing case of Lone Star long-necks.

I might be wrong here, but don't you traditionally deport someone back to their official country of residence, which isn't necessarily their country of birth (unless you're a naturalized U.S. citizen, in which case it would have to be your country of birth)? But Mr. Arar isn't a U.S. citizen! Where do Boosh and his Boyz get off deporting the resident of another country to a third country which apparently has the cheapest rates for torture?

I suppose there's no time for such quibbles when you're running a Crusade.

I remember reading about a Canadian citizen who was deported to the Middle East. Is this the same one, or this the first publicity this guy's receieved?

After spending sixteen years in public education, I could break a lot of bones if I could get my hands on my tormentors. I can't imagine what it must be like to be imprisoned and tortured physically, as well as mentally.

I hope this guy launches a website.
