WASHINGTON -
President Bush is deciding whether to lift a ban on oil and gas drilling in federal waters off Alaska's Bristol Bay, home to endangered whales and sea lions and the world's largest sockeye salmon run.

Leasing in a portion of area rich in oil and natural gas ended nearly two decades ago — while Bush's father was president — in the outcry after the Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989.

But with natural gas prices higher, the Interior Department's Minerals Management Service proposed reopening up the North Aleutian Basin. That includes Bristol Bay and part of southeastern Bering Sea. <snip>

<snip>Environmentalists oppose drilling there because of the potential for oil spills and harm to wildlife. They have speculated in recent days that Bush might allow such drilling before Democrats regain control of Congress in January.<snip>

Fuck-I didn't know he could do this! Rate this story up on Yahoo for visibility!

He's deathly afraid we will look at what's going on in and around Iraq. We might start asking questions about why Iraq just made a security and economic deal with Iran, just ignoring Li'l Boots altogether.

The bullies scream and threaten the loudest when they are about to be exposed.

10. The worse part about this
Is that the North Slope is ful of natural gas and it is extracted as a by-product of oil drilling, and the big guys like Exxon and British Petroleum have been under contract with the state to develop it and not just push it back into the ground like they do know.

The oil companies won't pump it or pipe it until the price is right...and the Republicans sit by and watch them.

11. This is dumb.
This is an issue that won't die until the drills have gone through the ground. No matter how many times you strike it down it is just an inevitable event. You think people are going to give a shit about the animals when there is no oil? Most people don't even care now. Let them drill and we don't look like loony environmentalists. It's nice to have a feel good cause now and then, but when it's an absolute waste of time it's probably better to move to something else.
