AP: FEMA Ordered to Resume Katrina Payments
FEMA Ordered to Resume Katrina Payments

By MATT APUZZO, Associated Press Writer

Wednesday, November 29, 2006 01 22 PM

(11-29) 13:22 PST WASHINGTON (AP) --

A federal judge ordered the Bush administration Wednesday to immediately resume
making housing benefits available to thousands of victims of Hurricane Katrina.

U.S. District Judge Richard J. Leon said the Federal Emergency Management Agency
failed to adequately explain why it ended the 18-month housing assistance program
for people who lost their homes in the 2005 storm.

Leon's ruling was issued as a temporary injunction requested by the Association
of Community Organizations for Reform Now, which filed suit in August saying FEMA
had violated the rights of Katrina victims by abruptly stopping housing payments.

The judge ordered the federal agency to explain its reasoning and allow the
displaced hurricane victims to appeal its decision. While that process goes forward,
the judge said, FEMA must keep making payments and must pay storm victims for
two months of housing since the decision to stop the program.

"Me and Dick 'Five Deferments' Cheney are doing fabulously well with our Massive Profiteering on the oil war in Iraq (heh, heh). Why don't those so-called Katrina 'victims' just shut up and sit down like good little proles." - Commander AWOL and star republicon crony, Brownie

14. That's right, let them pull themselves up by their bootstraps!
Problem is, most don't HAVE bootstraps to pull themselves up by. I'm glad that the Judiciary is finally starting to rein in Bush and his cavalcade of cronies, they've been running amok far too long.

4. "Are there no prisons? Are there no workhouses?..."
"...The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigor then?" ~Ebenezer Scrooge, collateral ancestor of George W. Bush~

Hekate

A bit more:
> 'Are there no prisons?...And the Union workhouse,' demanded Scrooge. 'Are they still in operation?'
>'Both very busy, sir.'
>'Oh. I was afraid, from what you said at first, that something had occurred to stop them in their useful course,' said Scrooge. 'I'm very glad to hear it.'
> 'Under the impression that they scarcely furnish Christian cheer of mind or body to the multitude,...a few of us are endeavouring to raise a fund to buy the Poor some meat and drink, and means of warmth. We choose this time, because it is a time, of all others, when Want is keenly felt, and Abundance rejoices. What shall I put you down for?'
> 'Nothing!' Scrooge replied.
> 'You wish to be anonymous?'
> 'I wish to be left alone,' said Scrooge. 'Since you ask me what I wish, gentlemen, that is my answer....I can't afford to make idle people merry. I help to support the establishments I have mentioned--they cost enough; and those who are badly off must go there.'
> 'Many can't go there; and many would rather die.'
> 'If they would rather die,' said Scrooge, 'they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population."

7. Real Crime is it's been 15 months
I assume this is a minority of the storms victims. But still at 15 months after the disaster. Everyone affected should be in semi-permanent to permanent housing.

9. My son is doing volunteer work in St. Bernard Parish
and some of the stories he's told me have left me practically speechless. The US Gov't. is paying some agency (forget name) about $750,000,000 to administer FEMA funds.

Mind boggling...

12. LOL!
That was my first thought, too! Aren't they in charge of "re-building the Gulf Coast" under the direction of Rove...something like that. He's told me the name of the outfit before but I forget right now. The cell connection is so crappy, you can only talk about 15 secs. then you lose the signal and have to re-dial!

11. Be interested in hearing some of those stories...
the more that comes out about the * & Co criminals the better! OMG-750M could certainly HELP a lot of people there in the Gulf now couldn't it?!

Interesting too when I clicked onto this thread and my eyes scanned the story, I read "crime victims of Katrina" instead of "victims of Katrina". Guess it's not so surprising since what's been done to the Katrina victims IS CRIMINAL! :grr:

16. there's a new documentary coming out 12/5/06 called "refuge of last resort"
a caller on randi rhode's show said he was stranded in new orleans and filmed what was going on.

he said he had a portable tv and couldn't believe what the rest of the country was shown compared to the reality of what was actually going on.

he also talked about the "gun grab" that took place

Judge tosses 1 Guantanamo suit; 2nd case in the works
- New York Times
Thursday, January 20, 2005

(01-20) 04:00 PST Washington -- A federal district judge ruled on Wednesday that the foreigners imprisoned at the naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, have no legal way to challenge their detentions in federal court.

Judge Richard Leon of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia said the seven prisoners who brought a claim in his court could not be granted what they asked for, writs of habeas corpus that would have required federal courts to consider whether they were lawfully detained.

He said the courts could not do this even though the Supreme Court ruled in June that the prisoners had the right to invoke the habeas corpus law in asking federal judges for relief. Leon made a distinction between the right to file for a habeas corpus petition before a judge and the right to obtain one.

The decision would be a major victory for the government and an equivalent setback to the detainees but for a quirk in the way the detainee cases have been distributed in the federal courts.

15. Could this had been done quicker and more satisfactorily if someone
had operated the program better? And less expensive?

The public needs to know that it could had been. AND would had been under a different president.
