France authorizes troops to fire at Israeli aircraft over Lebanon
http://www.playfuls.com/news_10_3834-France-Authorizes-Troops-To-Fire-At-Israeli-Jets-Over-South-Lebanon.html

French soldiers serving with the United Nations force in south Lebanon, who feel threatened by Israel Air Force (IAF) overflights, are permitted to shoot at Israeli aircraft, the Jerusalem Post daily reported Thursday, quoting "a high-ranking French military officer."

The French decision was conveyed several days after an Israel Defence Forces (IDF) general met French officials in Paris to explain why the IAF conducted the overflights in south Lebanon, in violation of a UN-brokered ceasefire which ended the fighting in the summer between Israel and Lebanese Hezbollah guerrillas.

The overflights over French positions have raised French hackles. On October 31, an IAF mock bombing run almost prompted the troops to launch anti-aircraft missiles.

Major-General Ido Nehushtan told his French counterparts in Paris that Israel was conducting the flights to collect intelligence on Hezbollah, which Israel has accused of also violating the UN ceasefire.

Its about time somebody stood up to the "IDF", I wonder whats going to happen when the French take one down?

2. Agreed
your response says it all! Any soldier and anyone certainly has the right of self defense and if the French feel threatened by IDF aircraft they seem to have clarified the ROE, which might just give the Israeli's the signal to steer clear of French positions.

4. Not that I am a big fan of
an eye for an eye, but Yes, the USS Liberty deserves a far, far better explanation than what we have to date. And a little gunboat diplomacy along the coast of Israel wouldn't have hurt either then or now.

7. Really? Who would it not have hurt?
I must hear your wisdom on this, and the great evil empire, Israel.

5. damn straight
This isn't like the Aegis cruiser that shotdown the Ianian airliner, that was a major screwup. This is Israeli aircraft making mock bombing runs to dick with the French. How could the French know it's not a real attack? The Israelis are being deliberately provocative for whatever reason. Damn straight those fighters should be engaged. Knowing that the gloves are off, the Israelis should be keeping their fighters away and nobody will have to die.

During the initial invasion in the current war, US anti-air assets engaged and destroyed several allied aircraft. A story I read said that one Tornado pilot saw a lock-on from a US missile battery and sent an anti-radiation missile right down that beam in self-defense.
