Humane Group Slams Cheney For Westmoreland [Pa.] Hunt
Edited on Tue Dec-09-03 04:03 PM by benfranklin1776
"Vice President Dick Cheney is being criticized for shooting duck and pheasant Monday at the
Rolling Rock Club in Ligonier, Westmoreland County, Team 4's Jim Parsons reported.

Mark Bolish, an employee of the exclusive private club, told Channel 4 Action News
that Cheney shot about 70 stocked pheasants and an unknown number of mallards
that were released for what is commonly referred to as a canned hunt. More than 400
of the 500 farm-raised birds that were released were killed.

The Humane Society of the United States on Tuesday called it a "deplorable" form of hunting,
because the birds are pen-reared and cannot escape. The HSUS also questioned the
ethics of canned hunts.

"This wasn't a hunting ground. It was an open-air abattoir, and
the vice president should be ashamed to have patronized this
operation and then slaughtered so many animals," said HSUS
senior vice president Wayne Pacelle in a written statement. "

Well Dick took a jet (Air Force Two) at taxpayers expense to come to Western Pennsylvania
and engage in essentially a preprepared slaughter. I for one strongly support hunting since many people
do so to feed their families and the hunters I know have a deep and abiding respect for nature. This cannot be considered hunting by any stretch of the imagination, since it involved using dogs to run captivity raised pheasants from nets past people sitting in blinds who then mow them down. This is typical of how this adminstration views all of nature, namely as a resource to be depleted to exhaustion for private indulgence. $#^%&^ Jerk.

Another thing, while he is having his little private hunting party at taxpayer expense his cronies in Congress were busy cutting people off unemployment just in time for Christmas. Wasn't Bush chief of staff Sununu hammered for using a taxpayer plane to go to a stamp convention?

1. So that's where he's been hiding out
Figured he was in a hole in the ground somewhere but this is much different. Hunting is fine with me but canned hunts are another story. That's not hunting.

6. Gawd is prolly still busy as hell sortin' all the birds he's whacked!
"Gawd sees every sparrow that falls from the sky and Gawd knows every hair on Dick's head!"

Dick was just tryin' to get the birds before the Bushco pollution whacks them all! By the time Bush is done polluting Gawd might even be extinct too! I hope the Dickster didn't shoot down any angels while he was in his mad killing frenzy BTW!

this is off topic but I know of an incident in the mid 70's that involved a gatling gun, a baited field in Delaware, a bunch of canada geese and a Dupont.

4. Hey, cut the guy some slack....
Somebody with his medical history can't be expected to tramp around in the cornfields and actually hunt for pheasants, after all. Besides, maybe the owner of this "hunting" club raised some money for the "reelection" campaign. So it was the patriotic thing to do! <sarcasm off>

Edited on Tue Dec-09-03 04:14 PM by jokerman2004
and All the Beasts of the Earth...

Can't screw -- gotta kill.

Anyways, since he's got entire armies out slaughtering the human meat, Dick prefers a more gentlemanly sport -- killing 70+ infantilized ducks with a hunting rifle.

A real man.

Who the #$%& does he think he is, Elmer Fudd?

14. Well You'll love this.
Most hunters have to flush their own quarry and clean what they kill. Not Elmer Fudd. Nope, his kills were cleaned, plucked and vacumn packed for him so that he could take them with him on his return to Washington. http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/03343/249105.stm

The whole thing reeks. It reeks of a preplanned slaughter for the King's amusement. Hell though even the King would saddle up and ride to where the fox was treed. It was many things but most assuredly not hunting.

29. Makes no difference.
Most hunters justify their need to "kill" by saying "I eat what I kill".

So did Jeffrey Dahmer.

No one "HAS" to kill animals to eat. You can buy ones that have been killed. You hunt because you want to kill. Cheney did not need to hunt and in fact was not ‘hunting’ as the word implies 'went looking' and canned hunts ensure that you will not have to do that. It is just LAZY KILLING.

35. Sure, but is that any better?
"You can buy ones that have been killed."

True, but store-bought meat comes from farm-raised animals raised in horrible conditions, pumped full of hormones and drugs, and slaughtered factory-style, often slowly and painfully. You don't HAVE to hunt, but it is damn more humane than eating factory-farm-raised animals. There is no moral superiority in paying someone else to kill for you. But that is beside the point. What Cheney did was not hunt; no self-respecting hunter would participate in a canned hunt like this.

12. canned hunts are bad, bad shit
My grandfather used to "hunt" at Rolling Rock.

R.R. is an old Mellon estate (i.e. Dick Scaife---hello?) which was transformed many decades ago into a posh retreat for the millionaires of Pittsburgh, primarily.

Gramps was always pissed that I never took to his passion. But, even at the age of 10, it always struck me as unfair. You'd be surprised (or maybe not) to hear how many national "leaders" have spent time there. Still, for all that, it's a great place to spend New Year's Eve!

24. "commonly referred to as a canned hunt" ? Why does Iraq come to mind ???

. . attack them

. . then sanction them

. . then disarm them

. . AND ATTACK AGAIN !!!

so they pick on a basically unarmed and starving nation

so the bird "canned hunt" thingie is hardly a stretch of their "values"

( or "lack of" values )

. (sigh) .

37. The 50,000 Watt Rush station KDKA was reporting the story this
morning. Announcer said what I previously posted from another story. They had the 70+ pheasants and unknown number of mallards (kinda fits the unknown number killed Cheney) were already vacuum packed and on ice on AF2 for Cheney to take back to his hidey-hole when he left.

And the news announcer said apparently none of the birds were donated to soup kitchens.

This club was built by the Mellons. Bet Dicky Mellon Scaife still has a big financial interest in it. And bet Cheney scarfed up some big ass donations while here.

This was his 2nd straight year at the club in one of these canned hunts.
