Hagel says Ricketts win vital to GOP hold on Congress

BY JAKE THOMPSON

WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

WASHINGTON - With control of the U.S. Senate up for grabs in the Nov. 7 elections, Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska is going all-out to try to knock off his Nebraska colleague, Democrat Ben Nelson.

The hand of Hagel is helping to guide the campaign of fellow Republican Pete Ricketts. Hagel also has contributed money and support to Republican candidates for other Nebraska offices.

Hagel said a Ricketts win could be the key to Republicans' retaining control of the Senate.

Sen. Chuck Hagel of Nebraska joins a band of Republicans and most Democrats in blocking renewal of the Patriot Act.

He insisted that his efforts to defeat Nelson are not personal, despite talk in Nebraska political circles that it seems so.

1. Hagel owned the voting machines that counted his own election
Never before had a white Republican carried the predominantly black and Democratic precincts in Omaha.

Give up, he won fair and square. Nelson was Gov, all election commisioners were his appointees, nelson lost fair and square.

Too bad Ricketts is such a wing-nut I wouldn't mind seeing Nelson gone.

4. Since when, NEDem are they 'not used in Nebraksa'...?
Also, Nelson's place in the US Senate is critical for a Dem majority in the senate. He is a placeholder and must remain *at least* until after Dems pick up the US Senate seats currently held by Gordon Smith (R-OR) and Susan Collins (R-ME) in 2008.

Nelson is here to stay, and must remain for the time being.

10. ummm I don't know where you get your "facts"
Likewise, the nation’s largest DRE company, Election Systems & Software (ESS), is owned by Michael McCarthy, campaign finance director for Nebraska’s Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel. Hagel, a former CEO and chairman of ESS, still held ESS shares even as his finance director’s voting machines tabulated the majority of Nebraska’s election, from which Hagel emerged victorious.

9. No only that
but it, IMHO, was the first "test" of vote stealing. The polls had Ben Nelson ahead of Chucky 49-44 as late as a few days before the election. But Hagel won by a 56-42 margin, when all indications were that Nelson was in the lead all day, up until the last couple of hours. It's strange how no one in NE seems to remember that.

5. Flame me all you want...
Ben Nelson supported the Torture Bill. He is a traitor to his country, and violated his oath of office to uphold the Constitution.

He should be tried for treason, and hung if found guilty.

I would write in a candidate for this one, or vote Green or Libertarian.

Screw Ben Nelson. Same for Sherrod Brown, and Harry Ford. All traitors.
