Feds form task force to crack down on Cuba sanction violations

MIAMI -- The Bush administration announced the formation of a new law
enforcement task force Tuesday that will aggressively pursue violations
of trade and travel sanctions imposed by the U.S. on Cuba for more than
four decades.

Miami U.S. Attorney R. Alexander Acosta said the task force will focus
on prosecuting criminal violators of U.S. laws governing such things
as prohibited commercial business with Cuba, currency reporting
requirements, money laundering and illegal travel to the island.

The task force's formation comes as Cuba faces political uncertainty due
to the illness of President Fidel Castro, who in July temporarily ceded
power to his brother, Raul. And it also comes about a month before U.S.
elections where Cuban-American voters in South Florida _ most of them
fervently anti-Castro _ form an important Republican Party constituency.
