SNIP--and let this be a lesson to you all!

HOUSTON -- Waynetta Nolan apologized from the witness stand Thursday, saying she was "going through a bad time in my life" when she ran over a McDonald's employee because she couldn't get mayonnaise on her cheeseburger.

Jurors were in no mood for excuses.

After deliberating about four hours, the Harris County jury served up a 10-year prison sentence for Nolan's April 23 rampage that injured the manager of a southwest Houston McDonald's.

"I can't imagine or think of anything more ridiculous than this. It all happened over a hamburger," state District Judge Brock Thomas told Nolan. "I sure hope it was worth it, because you'll have 10 years to think about it."

Nolan, 37, was convicted of aggravated assault Wednesday for running over and dragging Sherry Allen Jenkins, who had come outside to write down Nolan's license-plate number.

Nolan was in the drive-through lane during the lunchtime rush when she ordered two double cheeseburgers, super-sized french fries and a drink, according to witnesses. After being told she couldn't get mayonnaise in her cheeseburgers, she became incensed and still wasn't satisfied after Jenkins offered a burger made to her specifications.

2. What an asinine headline!
It was not a "complaint" that landed her in jail, it was running over someone with her car. This is one of my pet peeves with newspapers. Instead of coming up with a headline that simply sums up the article, they try to go for shock value or humor. I prefer my news to be accurate, not "clever." The story itself is sadly rather mundane -- a typical case of ____ rage (insert whatever modifying noun you choose -- it's all the same thing). Newspapers treat headlines as an afterthought when they're actually what people remember the most.

12. As a former sub-sub-editor (writer of headlines). . .
I can assure you, though headlines are written after the story is complete, they are not an "afterthought" but the product of considerable deliberation, both for content and size (they have to fit the space while they adhere to style guidelines). That said, all too often the headline is crafted to make an idiotic point or as a play on words (puns being the worst offense). It's done with the same rationale employed by advertising copywriters: to hook the reader into the story or to make the article memorable. Newspapers are in the business of selling news -- to this end, they all too often sacrifice objectivity and truth.

4. talk about anger management problems
The sad part is, this will not seem all that shocking to anyone working customer service. People going ballistic over the most trivial things, sometimes over nothing at all, are a daily occurence in customer service jobs, and death threats are not at all uncommon.

1. "death threats are not at all uncommon"...
And neither is death. If I recall from Fast Food Nation, in 1997 there were more fast food workers killed on duty than police officers.
sad...

9. Yeah, that caught my
eye too. It's bad enough to be working at a fast food place at 43 with permenant injuries due to a nutcase customer, but on top of that, she's apparently had really bad sex throughout her marriage. :-(

11. Just get a witness to say that she hadn't eaten in over an hour
Janklow defense.

Worse than the Twinkie defense.
