Lindsay Lohan wants to visit troops in Iraq

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Actress Lindsay Lohan wants to entertain U.S. troops in Iraq and follow in the footsteps of her idol, Marilyn Monroe, who visited soldiers in Korea during the 1950s. But first, Lohan plans to learn how to shoot a gun.

"I've been trying to go to Iraq with (U.S. Senator) Hillary Clinton for so long. Hillary was trying to work it out, but it seemed too dangerous," Lohan, 20, told Elle magazine in an interview that hits newsstands on Wednesday.

"I wanted to do what Marilyn Monroe did, when she went and just set up a stage and did a concert for the troops by herself," Lohan said. "It's so amazing seeing one woman just going somewhere, this beautiful sex kitten, who's basically a pinup, which is what I've always aspired to be."

A spokesman for the former first lady, now a New York Democrat expected to make her own bid for the White House in 2008, said Lohan had expressed an interest in going to Iraq.

"It was suggested to her that if she really wanted to, she could pursue doing so through the USO (United Services Organization)," Clinton spokesman Philippe Reines said.

As for entertaining the troops over there... Can she sing? Can she do magic tricks? Tell jokes? What can she do over there that will entertain the troops and not bored? Its funny that most people here admit to not knowing who the hell she is and then criticize her for being wanting to entertain the troops. I wonder if people who didn't know who Al Franken was would criticize him for doing the same. Lindsay Lohan had a role in the recent film Prairie Home Companion which seems to me to be a testament to the populism of radio. She played opposite Lily Tomlin who happens to be an actress with some integrity and real talent. Yes she is young and probably doesn't understand how what she is saying comes off, but I don't know that this warrants the kind of stupid misogynistic comments I've been seeing here. I would warrant a guess that she is no less misguided than Marilyn was when she performed for the troops. She probably has some of the same misunderstandings about what a warzone is, and what she will find when she gets there, but I hope that she does get there, and learns what she needs to learn about how fucked up this war is, and then I hope that she uses her position of power to speak to the youth of this country about how much she wants the current condition changed for the better and soon. People on DU sometimes don't understand how powerful these people are to direct the focus of the media, whether they realize it or not. It is easy to look at war in an abstract sense while safe in her Hollywood home. But getting to see conditions up close might be just what she needs, it will no longer be abstract. Granted, the amount of danger will likely be minimal for her, but she will get the tiniest glimpse into the hell we've created over there.
I don't begrudge wanting to entertain the troops. I feel that this might give her one of those moments of clarity. RW "entertainers" probably won't go because they would be forced to acknowledge what they've been denying all this time, that the war can't be won.

Lots of pent up Male frustration that is being taken out on Lohan for other reasons than her clearly less than well-thought out thoughts on the subject. I also think that she has a fanbase that might be well served by hearing about what Iraq is like, and if it makes her a smarter person, that can't be bad for her fanbase who follows her work and listens to what she says (and will vote in a couple years).

There are artists with "pop" classifications that have come out against the war and people at DU applaud them. I'm sure it was a very hard decision for them to make with whole entourages of people behind them that might lose their jobs because their popularity plummets. Lohan hasn't taken the plunge into making a statement about the war, but if she wants to see what Iraq is like, then she should go, see for herself, and hopefully throw her lot in with those of us who are fighting to end the war.
