Gibson proposes state effort (stem cell funding)
(Democratic) Gubernatorial hopeful would put $10 million toward stem cell research

July 20, 2006

Judy Brailsford's son Chris was just 36 when he died two years ago of ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

"One of the only hopes for Lou Gehrig's disease is stem cell research," the Las Vegas woman said Wednesday. "If the president vetoes this, he has truly lost sight of what's important."

President Bush did veto the congressional proposal to expand embryonic stem cell research Wednesday. But Henderson Mayor Jim Gibson said Nevada should step up with its own effort.

Gibson, a Democratic candidate for governor, unveiled a proposal to put state funds toward stem cell research, saying such an initiative would improve education and the economy in Nevada in addition to advancing science.

Thought so. This is more along the lines of what I remember of Gibson.

I'll keep looking.

"In an August primary with core Democratic voters, Gibson will have to explain two key facts. He is against a woman's right to choose an abortion and supported the ballot initiative in Nevada defining marriage as between a man and woman."

I'm not buying that someone backed by Bingham and Woodbury is a Democrat in anything other than name.

2. That's what we did in Cali
IIRC--last election voted a huge bond issue for stem cell research.

3. I'm all for stem cell research
but how much more can be shifted to the states. What are they spending all of this federal money for that we pay in taxes. To fund a war nobody wants except those who are making money off it? The states are going broke so much that they have already sold off toll roads to foreign countries and have increased property taxes so much that folks are having trouble meeting their tax deadlines. The jobs which are being offered are low paying non union jobs that will mean less state taxes in the coffers. I don't want to make anyone angry , and if nothing else can be done the states should pick up the tab for this needed research. Slowly but surely the states are paying their own way while politicians run wild with our federal tax dollars in washington.

4. The problem...
...as I understand it is the tremendous difficulty in using state funds for stem cell research when you also take NIH funds. You must keep all accounting separate to make sure that no NIH funds go towards stem cells. It makes the propostion very difficult.

That is why the Federal funding is so critical, not just for the funds themselves, but for the implementation of any state funds that may be allocated.
