Filmmaker Sues Rumsfeld Over Iraq Detention

A Los Angeles filmmaker today sued Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and other high-ranking military officials, alleging they violated his civil rights, international law and the Geneva Convention by imprisoning him for 55 days in Iraq last year.

...

Kar, a U.S. citizen and Navy veteran, went to Iraq 14 months ago to make a documentary film about Cyrus the Great, the Persian king who issued the world's first human rights charter.

...

While in confinement, the suit states, Kar was at various times hooded, restrained "in painful flexi-cuffs," and "repeatedly threatened, taunted and insulted" by U.S. soldiers.
At one point, according to the suit, a soldier at Abu Ghraib slammed Kar's head into a concrete wall.

...

What happened to him in Iraq was "a life altering experience," Kar said. He emphasized, "I am not a left wing liberal. I agree with many of George Bush's policies."

But he added, "I don't think the Constitution has to be gutted to achieve our objectives" in the war on terrorism. "I felt it was my duty as an American to take a stand for the constitutional rights guaranteed to all Americans."

1. No sympathy for anyone who "agrees with many of George Bush's policies"
I'm sure this guy was just fine with the torture and abuse ... until it happened to him. Then he throws a tantrum because it infringes with his sense of entitlement, what with being a bush boy and all.

Every American is afforded protection by the Constitution, not just the opposition.

13. So you only support rights for those who agree with you?
In other words - a one-party state with no other views tolerated.

7. After going through what he did, I'm surprised he managed to
do it at all. Law suits are stressful all by themselves.

11. That is because he is not a left wing liberal
so it took him awhile to realize what Bush and company were doing. Those who agreed with Bush's policies are just coming around to realize what us left-wing liberals already knew.

8. This guy's a vet, so obviously he's one of 'them'
SARCASM ALERT -

What did this guy expect? Rumsfeld has demonstrated that he has no regard for anything which doesn't fit in with the Unitary Executive theory of gubmit. . . to wit: he visited an 'enemy' nation! He's an American veteran! He must have been providing the Persians with top secret information on how to defeat our mighty Air Force!

/SARCASM

Guess this means that this guy has had the veil partially lifted from his eyes concerning the evil nature of the Bushevik regime. Too bad he may still "...agree with many of George Bush's policies."

I support politcal literacy tests for voting. If an idiot can't define what the Bill of Rights guarantees, he/she should be forcibly evicted from the voting rolls. Of course, this means the end of the Rethuglican party . . . guess that would be a bonus!

12. Sounds like he was imprisoned for no reason. Good for him. The
more people who sue Rummy and this WH the better. I hope he wins too.
