Lieberman to remain in Conn. primary

HARTFORD, Conn., June 19 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn., announced Monday he will not withdraw from the Aug. 8 Democratic primary in which he's being challenged.

The 64-year-old three-term senator, who was the Democratic Party vice presidential nominee in 2000, is being challenged by businessman Ned Lamont, and said he would leave his options open "if the unexpected" happened, and he lost the primary.

Lamont has made Lieberman's support for the war in Iraq a main issue.

If that were to happen, Lieberman could run in November's election as a petitioning candidate, but in that case, he would have only one day -- until 4 p.m. Aug. 9 -- to gather 7,500 signatures from registered voters, the Hartford (Conn.) Courant reported.

1. Ya gotta wonder who is running his campaign
That was a stupid story to put out in the first place. Now JoeMentum looks like he's retreating from a position by staying IN. Between this imbroglio, and that awful cartoon ad, he should be VERY worried.

But who knows, maybe he called his pals at Diebold.

18. Thanks. I see CT fought the SOS's determination to get DRE's with...
no paper trail and now has a 2 yr. extension. Good for CT.

4. This is a definitive non-answer from Lieberman
He has not ruled out an Independent run should he lose the election, but he will stay in the primary battle.

So the bloggers need to keep tabs on the Sec. of State office to find out if/when Lieberman files for a petition.

12. Before that
I'm sure the Lamont campaign would know the instant he started asking for signatures. They'll be ready for it.

5. Can he start gathering signatures in advance of the primary?

If so and he does, this should be jumped upon with both feet.

I'm glad he is choosing wisely. However, I think he's losing his marbles over his new threat to run a write-in general election candidacy.

Or is it that he's not ruling out trying to win as a dem while petitioning to get on as an Indy?
