4 charged with hate crimes in attack on singer (Gay Bashing)

NEW YORK (AP) -- A singer whose songs have topped the Billboard dance chart was attacked by a group yelling anti-gay slurs Saturday, and four people were arrested on hate-crime charges, police and his publicist said.

Kevin Aviance, 38, underwent surgery for a broken jaw after the attack, said his publicist, Len Evans.

Police said the singer, whose song "Alive" hit the top of the chart in 2002, was in stable condition.

A group of six or seven men attacked Aviance early Saturday, and passers-by did not stop to help as they threw objects at him, Evans said.

I grew up in the DEEP south and did not experience any racism like I experienced in Chi-town years later. Where I lived, most had a live and let live attitude. Something I thought I would find in California. A friend of mine said that in the South - Tn. - a least he knew who hated him because of his color or orientation, but in Ca., folks embrace him to "stab him in the back".
Ignorance is everywhere.
Doesn't always seem to be a group that does the beating and not one on one?

Usually when attacks like this happen in the south the broad brush comes out.


Groups give people a sense that they can get away with more and they loose some inhibitions that would prevent them from acting alone.

Samaritans (in case you didn't know) were social rejects - an underclass of lesser humans to the Hebrews.

Criminals beat a man, stole all his goods, and left him to die on the side of the road.

The pious priests saw the man and passed him by without a second glance.

It was the man from Samaria who helped the unfortunate soul, thereby receiving the praise of the teacher.

and to learn of this happening to him has saddened me on several fronts. i hope the ones who did this are caught and punished. that this still happens, in new york of all places, makes me realize we still have a lot of work to do.

A good Samaritan helped him to nearby Beth Israel, where doctors had to crack his jaw and realign it.

Gerard Johnson, 16, and Gregory Archie, 18, both of Manhattan; Akino George, 20, of the Bronx, and Jarrell Sears, 20, of Newark, were arrested in the attack. None of the suspects spoke as they were escorted by cops out of the 13th Precinct stationhouse early this morning to await arraignment.

They are all a bunch of chickenshits, kids ganging up to beat up on gays.

I don't know how Kevin will perform at Gay Pride with his jaw wired shut. But he'll probably work the bashing and the jaw into his act somehow. He is never at a lack for startling, stunning creativity.
