Iraq war will hurt GOP in fall elections, pollster says (Zogby)
http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060602/NEWS11/60602016

The war in Iraq has become so unpopular that it could cost Republicans control of Congress, statehouses and governor races around the country, national pollster John Zogby said Friday.

He said 70% of voters believe the U.S. is headed in the wrong direction, adding, “I have never seen a number like that since I’ve been polling.”

He said 68% of voters believe the war in Iraq wasn’t worth the loss of American lives. He added, “Americans want their wars to be won, they want it won quickly and their troops home and out of harms way.”

2. Well, it should
It's been the biggest mistake in this country since Vietnam.. a scandalous loss of life and property over nothing.

5. In some ways, I think Iraq is a bigger mistake than
Vietnam was. Here's why: I don't think Vietnam sullied our global reputation the way Iraq has (although from what I've read, we certainly deserved to have our rep sullied globally for what we did in southeast Asia).

The reason I think Iraq has sullied our reputation worse than Vietnam is that there have been no consequences with Iraq-nam for any of the policy makers involved. Vietnam, by contrast, brought down two presidents (Johnson and Nixon) and may have contributed to the assassinatin of a third (JFK). People in the world see this lack of accountability for what must now be called naked aggression (the worst crime, according to Nuremburg) and it makes the U.S. look even worse.

7. I won't argue there
In the long term, Iraq will probably have greater repercussions.

14. I'm afraid we won't gain as much as we should this time.

Zogby said: “The Democrats have no program on any issue, they have nothing to say that matters to anyone in the United States today."

We have the unusual opportunity this election to make a veritable death blow to the far right wing that won't come again. The people are ready to make the change. But they want a new vision of the future. They want a future that frees them from the corporate cronyism that we have been living under for the past five years. They want fascism reversed.

So how are the Democrat leaders trying to win over the populace? With silence.

They're letting the repugs defeat themselves. And that may work. But the people want leadership, they don't want to hear "See, we're not nearly as bad as they are."

To my mind the one thing that Democrats should do is fire all the consultants. They are the ones that got us into the minority in the first place. Then stand up and just talk to the people.

TomPaine.com had a fascinating article here
that said:

"It’s time for the WITTs to take over from the YOYOs."

He defined the republican principle as "You're On Your Own" and the Democrat's as "We're In This Together". That's the kind of talk the national Democrats should be speaking.

Silence convinces no one.

16. Republican Principle "You're on your own" plus "me, me, me, me, me, me"
Santorum has a book just being released that underlines this point. It is called "It takes a family" a very blatant play on words from Hillary's "It takes a village"

17. There really is no option here. If Democrats don't regain control,
the country is in serious peril. If Republicans keep their majority, they'll be emboldened to pass all kinds of noxious legislation. Gay rights? Fuhgeddabowdit. Abortion rights? I don't think so. Spying? They've only just begun. And, needless to say, there will be lower taxes for rich folks and no health care for the masses. Failure is not an option.
