LAT/AP: Bush Honors War Dead at Arlington
Bush Honors War Dead at Arlington
By NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer
May 29, 2006

ARLINGTON, Va. -- President Bush, visiting America's most hallowed military burial ground to "honor this place where valor sleeps," said Monday the nation must persevere in the war against terrorists for the sake of those have already given their lives in the cause.

Noting that some 270 fighting men and women of the nearly 2,500 who have fallen since the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, are buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Bush said, "We have seen the costs in the war on terror that we fight today."

"I am in awe of the men and women who sacrifice for the freedom of the United States of America," the president declared, drawing a long standing ovation from the troops, families of the fallen and others gathered at the cemetery's 5,000-seat white marble ampitheater.

"Here in the presence of veterans they fought with and loved ones whose pictures they carried," he said, "the fallen give silent witness to the price of liberty and our nation honors them this day and every day."

Bush said the nation can best honor the dead by "defeating the terrorists....and by laying the foundation for a generation of peace."...

1. Did they use that headline because...
"Bush Spits on War Dead at Arlington" would have taken up too much space?

28. I heard him say that Arlington Cemetery
reminds us of why the United STates always enters war reluctantly. I was fuming - Bush was pulling at the bit to get into a war with IRaq. Every time I feel bad for Loser Boy, as he hems and haws, and shifts his feet during a press conference or statement, just hating to have to be there, I say, "YOu wanted it, Loser Boy, now pay the price of 29% ratings." He is so clearly miserable as president now. He would like to cut and run.

2. I hate him
for what he has done to his country and to our soldiers. How dare he have the nerve to show his face anywhere near Arlington after he used our military for a fake war.

This is the same line of crap Bush has been spouting for more than three years now. How does piling up more dead bodies honor those who have already died for a lie? Makes me sick. :grr:

4. Does he have an obsession with the word "terrorists"?
The "We're going to get them before they get us" mentality seems to be increasing with each speech he gives. If he bothered to read history he'd know that "terror" is not something that can be won with more and more bombs and soldiers' lives.

9. My brother is buried in Arlington
He was a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force and served in Vietnam. He was a physical survivor but came home disillusioned and hating war. He was a good man. How dare this idiot defame his honor.

6. Anyone who believes a word this man says is an absolute moran
This man has been exploiting the dead ever since he appeared with a fake firefighter over the rubble of the WTC and and shouted that, "The people who knocked these buildings down will hear you!" Right, that's why he went after Saddam instead of Osama.

This man is a poser in the worst way and is incapable of any sort of human decency or integrity. He needs to go bye-bye!

8. I have to respectively disagree with all of you.
We may not respect the man in the position, but it is the duty of the Office of the Presidency to honor the heros of this nation on Memorial Day. I do not like George Bush, but as the elected representative to the Office of Presidency, I expect him to honor those who have fought and those who have given their lives for the sacrafice of this nation.

12. well he's the man that's there now and we have to deal with
the consequences now... if we don't like it work like hell to get representatives elected into congress that will impeach his ass... Until then he is the designated official and he has a responsibility to honor those who have fought in wars past and present.

13. He cannot honor them, he only brings dishonor
It is an affront to all that is decent about this country that he is not behind bars.

He spits on the very graves he pretends to honor.

Take your sanctimonious crap elsewhere, please.

Oh yeah, and welcome to DU.

I hate that Bush is in office. In the first national election that I ever was able to vote in, I voted against the man. Of course, it didn't matter much then because I was registered in Vermont. The second election I voted against him in Florida. To my utter disgust the man was re-elected. No matter our views on the man in the office, the office still stands for something. I hope we pick a better person to the head of that office, but until we do, we are stuck. If he didn't say anything, I would be even more pissed at him than I already am. Personally, I believe he should be on his hands and knees forgiving American soldiers and their families for putting us through an unecessary war.

21. We picked a better man twice
and yet the impostor is at Arlington. His very presence there brings more dishonor to the office than any bitching about it on an internet forum could ever do, so please don't come here and chide us for our righteous indignation.

Ok?

19. Yes, and he could send someone in his place to honor the dead.
Edited on Mon May-29-06 02:01 PM by stopbush
It happens all the time. No president has the time to get to every single event they're
required to attend. * has sent plenty of people to represent him and the office. But
it will NEVER be an option with * when it involves using the deaths of our fallen
soldiers to advance his democracy destroying agenda. That's one thing we can
all agree on.

There are other options to his showing up in person.

29. His fake homage is worthless-no matter what his title
Had he, 364 days a year honored those who fought, I would be more inclined to agree with you. I remember purple band aids at his convention, his treatment of McCain, Murtha, and the other old soldiers--not to mention his misuse of the current soldiers. No. He stands in Arlington thumbing his nose at the dead soldiers and what they stood for.

14. Until He see's close up the carnage of our soldiers and
the Iraqui citizens....then he can keep his lying false words to himself...If the man can send our boys and girls into harms way then he can take his ass there...I don't want him to see them when they are cleaned up....I want him to look them, I want him to understand the pain an horror he has thrust upon them...

This is a game to him folks....it may be his Presidential duty to attend the memorials but it is also his duty to be honest and sincere and he has done neither....

A Man or Women must earn respect to be respected....He does not deserve our respect...he works for the American people...(in theory)...and it's time for the American people to step up and make sure that our military is not abused for the sick ambitions of a wanna be pretend leader.....

How can our country be so divided? This so-called "war on terror" is his legacy and he's milking it for everything it's worth. The people who cheer his hollow words are evidently oblivious to the damage he has done. SHAME!!!

I wonder if he paid a special tribute to those who died in his place in Nam
while he was slugging back brewskies in the champagne unit?

22. The disturbing thing is that his bullshit is given a standing ovation.
Bush: "I am in awe of the men and women who sacrifice for the freedom of the United States of America," the president declared, drawing a long standing ovation from the troops, families of the fallen and others gathered at the cemetery's 5,000-seat white marble ampitheater.

That's bullshit.

If he were in awe, why dishonor the troops by brazenly sending them off to fight an internationally illegal conflict based on a pack of lies?

If he were in awe, why send the troops into conflict WITHOUT proper armor, proper gear, proper training, proper weaponry.

If he were in awe, why deny fallen troops the recognition they deserve by declaring it illegal for the press to photograph their return to their country for which they fought?

If he were in awe, why slash active duty combat pay the moment the troops' boots hit the ground in Iraq?

If he were in awe, why slash programs for the dependents of these troops, including education for their children, the moment the troops' boots hit the ground in Iraq?

If he were in awe, why support the most criminally negligent Secretary of Defense this country has ever seen?

If he were in awe, why reward Halliburton with more multi-billion dollar wartime contracts after it's been proven they fed these troops that he's in awe of, rotten food.

If he were in awe, why remain silent as the deductible for veterams healthcare is raised?

If he were in awe, why not attend the funerals of the fallen?

If he were in awe, why remain silent as the Swift Throat Liars smeared the military service of an honorable man?

If he were in awe, why hasn't he made more trips to visit the troops on the ground in Iraq?

If he's in awe, why does he still refuse to meet with Cindy Sheehan?

If he's in awe, why did he betray them by outing a CIA agent for political revenge, therefore destroying her work to prevent more conflicts that will take these troops' lives?

I understand that no one wants to rock the boat at a patriotic ceremony. However, I imagine if I'd been there, I would have remained seated. I could not have applauded the lies of the man.

He's tainted the blood of every single soldier who has fallen for this country. Because of all he's done their sacrifice has been rendered futile.

a draft dodging deserter like this actually has to the gall to stand on the graves of men and women who did not shirk their duty, while their living fellows are nothing more than gangsters for Wall Street. Maybe we have the government we deserve.
