http://www.theherald.co.uk/news/4891.htmlTony Blair Explains
THERE have been many visitors to Downing Street in the time I have been prime minister. But despite the protests and media coverage, I genuinely believe no visit has been better timed or more important than that today by President Bush.
I am convinced that there could not be a better moment for President Bush to come to the UK, nor a better opportunity to reaffirm our special relationship. This is not because I agree with everything the US does. I have my differences over policy with this president as I had with the last one.
Where there are differences, I'll press Britain's case privately or publicly, whichever way is likely to bring the best results for our country.
But these differences mustn't be allowed to overshadow the truth that our two countries share the same values, the same love of freedom and democracy, and the same determination to build a safer world. Nor the fact that America is not just our closest ally but also the world's most powerful nation. If we want progress on our priorities for the world, we have to work with the US.
