CNN//Reuters: Report: NASA lacks science funds
Report: NASA lacks science funds
Thursday, May 4, 2006

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (AP) -- NASA lacks the money to support vigorous science research while building the international space station and returning astronauts to the moon, according to a report released Thursday by the National Research Council.

The end result, the scientists warned, will be further erosion of the nation's leadership in scientific research.

"NASA is being asked to accomplish too much with too little," said the document, prepared by a panel of scientists at the request of Congress.

The proposed 2007 budget for the space agency could weaken programs for space and earth science, jeopardize national research goals and stunt the development of the nation's next generation of scientists.

"The cuts fell disproportionately on the small missions and the research and analysis part of the program," said Lennard Fisk, a space science professor at the University of Michigan and former associate NASA administrator who chaired the committee. "These are the foundation programs ... If you disproportionately cut there, you disproportionately cut the pipeline."...

1. Science, schmience!
That's just a big black canopy, up there, with pinholes pricked through it so that God and the angels can shine their flashlights on us. Now, go away, you silly scientists, and get real jobs.

3. Mission Accomplished
Get rid of real science and piss money away on President Chuckle-Nutz's
stupid idea.

BTW Even if we could build the base on the moon and build a rocket there to go
to mars (both of which are very complex) we have no way to get rocket fuel to the
moon for the trip to mars.

I was just in Senator Nelson's (FL) DC office last Tuesday with one of my students making exactly this point.

Plenty of federal dollars for those. Just tell Bush that you're searching for evidence of God's "intelligent design" up there.

Funding problem solved.

8. Nobel prize winning physicist Leon Lederman once said;
Physics isn't a religion. If it were, we'd have a much easier time raising money.

9. If I remember correctly,
NASA had to cancel a satellite destined to study Earth's environment, to measure the effects of global warming.
