Tower City shuts off band for political T-shirts
Saturday, April 29, 2006
Michael Sangiacomo
Plain Dealer Reporter

A band wearing anti-President Bush T-shirts was silenced in mid-performance at Tower City Friday because the mall's management felt the band's attire was inappropriate.

Mifuné, an Afro-beat band, was performing as part of the Tri-C JazzFest when the sound was cut off about 20 minutes into the set on orders from Tower City management.

"They didn't like that all the band members wore a T-shirt with a picture of George Bush with a line through it," said band leader Jacob Fader, 28, of Cleveland Heights. "They said we either remove the shirts, turn them inside out, or get off the stage. I said that doing so would be against our core principles and free speech. We told the audience what happened from the stage after the microphones were cut. The crowd booed."

3. Re:
Can Bush stand opposition? I wonder about that.

His actions after 9/11 seem to suggest that he can't. Remember the "Free Speech Zones", the guy being banned from the mall because of an anti-Bush shirt, and how Cindy Sheehan was kicked out of the Capitol during Bush's "State of the Union"? Agree or disagree with the woman (I tend to find her somewhat extreme), it was a 'peek behind the curtain' of this administration, as it were.

4. Re
I just read the "Freeper" response to this new item. Someone said that mall management has the right to "ban offensive political slogans" or something like that.

Yeah, offensive political slogans like the kind that disagrees with the right-wing point of view. Tsk Tsk.... these are the people who supposedly believe in the Constitution and 'American values'.

6. I'm betting that if
one of the musicians had worn a shirt ridiculing Bill Clinton, it would have passed without comment and the band would have been allowed to continue playing uninterrupted.
