Beaumont police arrest perverts in the park
Edited on Tue Apr-11-06 01:55 PM by TrogL
http://www.theexaminer.com/npps/story.cfm?ID=116

Beaumont police conducting a sting at Tyrrell Park trying to stop indecency at public parks arrested Doak Lamb, the principal at Woodcrest Elementary School in Port Neches after he requested anal sex from undercover officers.

According to the officers, who were patroling the park and going into and out of the public buildings there, Lamb responded to officers advances but rejected oral sex, instead saying that he preferred anal sex and had brought his own condoms.

...

Sources in Port Neches confirmed that Lamb was also a deacon at the First Baptist Church in Groves.

Another arrestee was an employee of Patriot Security.

I grew up around Beaumont and Port Neches and Groves.

Not exactly the most tolerant places in the country.

9. hey, Tom
Small-ish world. A few months ago, I mentioned to you about how I used to live in Mill Valley and I've always dreamed of living in Tiburon and taking the ferry to work in downtown SF.

I knew you had also lived in TX, but I didn't know you lived in that part of TX. I spent a couple of years in Beaumont. And you're right...it's not the most tolerant place. Far, far from it.

My personal opinion is that the Beaumont police have better things to do than to go arrest these idiots (who should've known better than to look for sex in a park).

14. Hey, back at you, Don
Yeah, my family settled in what are now Jefferson and Angelina Counties almot 400 years ago (1630).

Although I "grew up" all over the State, the Golden Triangle owns my heart.

And you are right, there must be a thousand better places to play around than Tyrrell Park.

You should see the Bay today. Gray and pumping. Water looks like lead with whitecaps.

28. Surprisingly, many people are pissed at the cops
This area has a severe budget crunch because of some decisions made by local elected officials regarding tax abatements and an entertainment complex, as well of course from Hurricane Rita's destruction. I'm rather pleasantly surprised at the number of people I've heard complain about this stunt that the cops pulled and that there are plenty of things that could have been done with even this small amount of money.

Of course, I've also heard some rather nasty remarks from some people, but they have thankfully been in the minority.

HeeHee. I know I shouldn't be asking that question.

Beaumont is about 1-1/2 hours north of me.

I don't think that the police should be arresting people for asking for a date.

P.S. Those conservative Baptists always have issues about (I can't mention the word).

Lamb was accompanied by at least seven other men who were also busted in the sting. Several of those men were arrested for indecent exposure, which is a Class B misdemeanor. The other men were arrested on traffic charges despite having conversations of a sexual nature with male undercover police officers.

As they were being arrested some of the men begged officers to be released from custody and asked if there was anything they could do to "let me go." Murphy even started crying and begged to call his wife, saying that he had a bad heart caused from years of diabetes

Officers who arrested Murphy said that in addition to placing his hands inside his shorts and masturbating, he asked for other pleasures.

Beaumont - one wild and crazy place!

26. Why exactly are they "perverts"?
For seeking consensual sex with other adults? For having to hide their true selves because of a society which forces them to lead these double lives? For enagaging in sexual activity different from that in which you personally engage? For what exactly are they "perverts", pray tell?

37. It is hiding it -- it's skulking around having anonymous sex
instead of being easy in your skin and accepting yourself... because you've been taught to hate yourself. Many of us can break free of this, some can't. This is what these men do... and the cops need to go do something more worthy of their profession.

Why, did they shout the request through a megaphone?
I'm not certain of the exact area in which these men were arrrested, but it could have been a very secluded spot. And as I've already posted, Tyrell is not the kind of park that most here seem to think it is.

38. "Not the kind of park that most here seem to think it is"
The definition of "public park" I'm familiar with implies that the public get to set the rules about which kind of conduct is permissible.

Sunbathing? Yes
Frisbees? Yes
Walking your dog? Maybe
Anonymous sex? uh, probably not.

I don't feel sorry for these guys at all. Get a room.

Oops, I guess they got one.

I accept that these guys are living in an oppressive environment, and they should have a safe place to get together. But, man, they should not be using public facilities as a hang-out. The cops should move them out, and arrest them as a public nuisance, or something similar, if they persist. Trapping these guys into an indecency charge is a different matter, though.

ETA: I didn't read the subthread closely enough. Cruising for sex is not a perversion. Having sex in a public sex is, IMO. But I don't see anything that indicates that anyone was actually having sex.

get caught up in the guilt and self-loathing that these fundy churches sell. They go haywire. If their message was tolerance and acceptance, most of the guys that were arrested would be settled down with husbands and families.

40. It Could Simply Be Sexually Compulsive Behavior

...and not a gay/straight thing at all.

If I wandered a public park soliciting anonymous women for sex, I'd probably end up being arrested too - and probably long before anyone took me up on the offer.

If it's not about a compulsive neurosis with these guys, and the solution is to have designated cruising places, that's fine too. It would increase their efficiency and avoid unintended encounters by those not interested.

18.  a little tune to sing the time away
Poisoning Pigeons In The Park
------Tom Lehrer

I'd like to take you now on wings of song, as it were, and try and help you forget perhaps for a while your drab, wretched lives. Here's a song all about spring-time in general, and in particular, about one of the many delightful pastimes the coming of spring affords us all.

Spring is here, a-suh-puh-ring is here.
Life is skittles and life is beer.
I think the loveliest time of the year is the spring.
I do, don't you? 'Course you do.
But there's one thing that makes spring complete for me,
And makes ev'ry Sunday a treat for me.

All the world seems in tune
On a spring afternoon,
When we're poisoning pigeons in the park.
Ev'ry Sunday you'll see
My sweetheart and me,
As we poison the pigeons in the park.

When they see us coming, the birdies all try an' hide,
But they still go for peanuts when coated with cyanide.
The sun's shining bright,
Ev'rything seems all right,
When we're poisoning pigeons in the park.

Lalaalaalalaladoodiedieedoodoodoo

We've gained notoriety,
And caused much anxiety
In the Audubon Society
With our games.
They call it impiety,
And lack of propriety,
And quite a variety
Of unpleasant names.
But it's not against any religion
To want to dispose of a pigeon.

So if Sunday you're free,
Why don't you come with me,
And we'll poison the pigeons in the park.
And maybe we'll do
In a squirrel or two,
While we're poisoning pigeons in the park.

We'll murder them all amid laughter and merriment.
Except for the few we take home to experiment.
My pulse will be quickenin'
With each drop of strychnine
We feed to a pigeon.
It just takes a smidgin!
To poison a pigeon in the park.

19. So, penalty for waving your wanger in the park:
Ruined life, career, marriage, reputation . . .

Penalty for starting illegal war with lies and innuendo? Nothing.
Penalty for exposing undercover CIA agent? Nothing.
Penalty for accepting money from industry agents in support for industry favorable legislation? Nothing.

Yeah, they should keep it out of the park. But IMO, this punishment is exacted gleefully by police and far exceeds the crime.

Edited on Tue Apr-11-06 02:49 PM by NYC
but would these same people have suffered societal consequences for having gone to a gay bar? Probably. That's probably why they are trying to meet in a park.

One cause of promiscuity is not being allowed to have a permanent partner. Some people, in hiding their homosexuality, are forced into abstinence or promiscuity.

I think of Tchaikovsky. He actually earned good money, but was always lacking money because he paid blackmail. Very unfortunate, and all caused by intolerance of homosexuality.

25. Tyrell isn't the kind of park you folks are thinking about
Tyrell Park is about 400 acres or so, with gardens, a golf course, stables, trail rides, etc. It isn't just a small city block type park where kids go to play on the merry go round. I've avoided as much of the local coverage as I can, so I'm not certain where exactly this sting was.

There are plenty of things for the local police to worry about rather than setting up these sex stings, but of course they seem to enjoy doing this kind of work instead of going after the murderers and rapists in this area. A few years ago they gleefully went after a local "massage parlor" as well.

And as for The Examiner, all I can say is that it used to be a good paper. I thought it was much better than the local Hearst rag the Enterprise, as it used to do in depth stories about things that really mattered, like where county tax dollars were really going and the idiocy at some of the local school districts. In the last several months, it seems to have become little more than a tabloid.

And I'm very surprised at the wording in the title, since The Examiner was also a very liberal paper and has one or two quite well known and very out gay men working on its staff. But they've already gotten a complaint from me about that.
