Bush Approval at 38%

President Bush’s job approval rating continues at 38%, a new Zogby International telephone poll shows.

Bush posted his best ratings in the Midwest and Great Lakes states, where 47% approved of his leadership, and in the south, where 41% gave him positive marks. He received positive job approval marks from 40% in the West, and 23% in the East.

The President had positive marks from more men (44%) than women (34%).

Among Republicans, 73% gave Bush positive marks, compared to 10% of Democrats who did the same. Among independents, 30% gave him a positive job assessment.

.....Asked for which party’s candidate respondents were intending to vote in this year’s congressional races, Democrats retained a slight edge over Republicans. Democrats were favored by 36%, compared to 31% who said they would vote for the GOP candidate. In those states where Bush won the 2004 presidential race, Republicans held a slight 36% to 32% edge, but in states won by Democrat John Kerry two years ago, Democrats held a significant lead, 40% to 27%. Democrats appear to be holding their congressional base better than the GOP, as 75% of Democrats said they would support their party’s candidate, compared to 70% of Republicans who said they planned to back their party’s entrant in the local race for federal office.

Among independents, Democrats hold a 27% to 14% lead, with 49% of independents undecided at this early stage in the midterm elections.

However, respondents favored Republicans over Democrats when asked which party’s candidates “better represents your values.” Republicans were preferred by 44%, compared to 42% who said the Democrats are closer to their values.

The survey of 1,007 likely voters was conducted via telephone March 14-16, 2006. The poll carries a margin of error of +/- 3.2 percentage points.

I grew up in Watseka -- farm country -- and the rest of my family still lives there.
There were Clinton Democrats who, inexplicably, voted for Bush. National security. Taxes.
It sickens me. I hate to go home and listen to these formerly rational people spout the latest hateradio/Faux News (yes, they're all Faux watchers now)nonsense.
It's sad, because they're so ill informed. I intentionally talk over their heads, mentioning peoples, events, articles,...facts, because they irritate me so much. And it's so disheartening that they've given up on being informed and educated about the world.

has a progressive, lefty editorial page. They include some RW syndicated people, but their own editorials ALWAYS lean left. It's nice to read that each evening, after having tried to get throught the RW rag that is the Chicago Tribune over lunch.

My experience has been that rural people in Illinois are more liberal than those in the Chicago area, and the Tribune is exhibit A. What a POS!

I've lived in central Illinois most of my life, and folks here are no less informed than anyone else. The people I know--including all of my relatives--listen to NPR, read a variety of magazines. They tend to be issues voters, mroe than straight ticket voters, but there are exceptions.

Please don't lay that "I've left the farm, and now I'm O SO much more sophisticated than them" crap on us. Those are your issues. Deal with 'em.

not all people in central Illinois. Although Democrats rarely even field candidates in Iroquois County and the surrounding areas as it's a waste of time and money. This is a very Republican area.

And in downstate Illinois..you know, the part the governor is too good to visit. We help to pay for the expenses of DuPage and Cook County, and then have to listen to ourselves being called hicks by people came from somewhere else and never seem happy here. you get 20 people per state. Which immediately sends red flags waving about the ability to make meaningful comments by states and even groups of states.

The margins of error are going to be awfully large even for 5 states linked into some artificial region.

sampling methods that poll based on historical voting patterns, so they don't necessarily reflect the division of Dems vs. Repukes in the general population. I think generally Zogby and Harris do a better job of balancing the numbers accurately, but they still have to work from voting patterns in the latest elections. Since the 2004 election numbers were cooked pretty much everywhere that electronic voting/vote counting systems were used, it tends to skew polls like this one away from Dems. For those that understand the problem, it just reinforces the need for actual hand-counted paper ballots.
