Abu Ghraib Dog Handler Found Guilty

(AP) WASHINGTON A jury found an Army dog handler guilty Tuesday of abusing detainees at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison by terrifying them with a military dog, allegedly for his own amusement.

Sgt. Michael J. Smith, 24, was found guilty of six of 13 counts. He had faced the stiffest potential sentence of any soldier charged so far in the Abu Ghraib scandal.

He was charged with 13 offenses and faces up to 24 1/2 years in prison if convicted on all counts. The seven jurors - four officers and three enlisted soldiers - began deliberating Friday after four days of testimony.

The government contends that Smith, of the 523rd Military Police Detachment, Fort Riley, Kan., used his dog to intimidate five prisoners for fun and competed with another canine handler trying to make detainees soil themselves.

2. Taking any bets on how long he gets?
Will this be another conviction for show, while the real culprits escape punishment?

4. my thoughts
When my grandfather served in the Navy during and after WW2, he was assigned to paint a plane. He asked if he should paint the entire thing, and the commanding officer said yes. So he painted the entire thing, windows, wheels and all. Guess who got in trouble? The CO. Why? Because that was his responsibility. The men under his command were under his control. When they did what they were ordered to do, and what they were ordered to do was wrong, the CO got in trouble. Why did that change?

This is "A Few Good Men" in real life. Where is Demi Moore when we need her? At least Jack took responsibilty as opposed to this whole fiasco... I guess that is the difference between fiction and reality. Reality Bites.

5. So are there charges against the other handlers with whom he "competed"?

9. and if not for the photos, he'd still be strolling around today.
scapegoat or not, this guy deserves a long, long prison term, with some really mean-ass prison guards. (think Marcellus Wallace in Pulp Fiction....pipe wrench and blow torch...)

13. Dogs are considered unclean in Islam
I'm sure that is one of the reasons they humiliated the prisoners with dogs. What makes people act this way to other people?

14. "What makes people act this way to other people?"
That, Danmel, is precisely the question our society should be asking.

But we are too afraid of the answer.
