Anti-Iraq War Demonstrators Seek Momentum
Anti-Iraq War Demonstrators Seek Momentum
On the Third Anniversary of the Iraq War, Activists Want to Start Grass Roots Movement to End the Conflict

By BOB JAMIESON

March, 17, 2006 — When anti-war activists mark the third anniversary of the invasion of Iraq this weekend, their demonstrations will be aimed not at Washington but at communities across the country. Organizers hope this strategy will turn declining public support for the war into a grass roots movement to end U.S. involvement.

"This will allow people to participate directly without traveling, to be involved in the anti-war movement right where they live," said Brian Becker spokesman of The Answer Coalition.

There will be one protest in Washington, D.C. staged outside Vice President Cheney's house. But nothing in Washington will evoke memories of the mass gatherings at the White House, Pentagon and on The Mall during the Vietnam War.

2. We already have it
Sad to say because all of this could have been prevented.

I think some people are just really that afraid of admitting that they could have been duped and been so wrong.

3. Freepers will counter-demonstrate tomorrow.

"Free Republic, a conservative organization that supports the war, is mounting counterdemonstrations in several places this weekend.

"When you make a commitment to a foreign country like Iraq, you need to keep it" said Free Republic spokesman Kristinn Taylor. "If you don't, you'll sentence the Iraqi people to a living hell."

4. Isn't that a hoot? I could swear these are also the same people
who have called for turning Iraq into a "sheet of glass." They do blow hot and cold, don't they?

One day a blubbering, breathless humanitarian, wanting to waste every possible volunteer American life "keeing the committment" to some hypothetical Iraqi people (while destroying their country and slaughtering them), following on the heels of foaming-at-the-mouth howls to level Fallujah and let the blood flow in the streets (let the Lord sort them out) and then pompously blowing off to reporters about their saintly point of view.

They're just too good for this world.

Celso Tolman, member, International Longshore & Wharehouse Union (ILWU)
Rev. Gwen Hall
Jorge Torres, College Not Combat campaign
Music by Jim Page

Why demonstrate on the 3rd anniversary of the US invasion of Iraq? Because 3 years is 3 years too many. Because more 100,000 Iraqis have been killed and their country has been destroyed. Because more than 2,000 US soldiers have died, and thousands wounded. Because the Iraq war is not just a "bad policy:" the US has its sights set on any country that defies its drive towards Empire: Iran, Syria, Cuba, Venezuela, Palestine... Because its a racist war that demonizes Arab and Muslim people and diverts funds from communities of color and the poor here at home. Because the US is spending $200 million a day on war, instead of jobs, education, healthcare and housing. Because the politicians won't stop the war for us. Come out for the Seattle rally and March, Saturday, March 18. Gather at 12 noon in Westlake Park.

8. Oh, this ought to be fun.
I'm in Fresno as well and yes there will be an anti-war demostration here (really, we're not all freepers). On second thought I better bring extra water bottles for eye wash, just in case.

13. Advertise
They would get better turnout if people knew when and where they were going to be. I proactivly search for these events, and still miss them regularly. It's not uncommon that I come into work, hit cnn.com, and see that there was an event in DC the day before, and I didn't know about it.
