Harkin calls for troop pullout in Iraq

DES MOINES, Iowa Senator Tom Harkin has called for the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq, saying it's the only solution after recent religious violence in that nation.

The Iowa Democrat says Iraq is now in a civil war. He says American withdrawal should begin immediately to--quote--"extricate ourselves from that quagmire over there."

Harkin's comments place him among the first members of Congress to publicly state that the war in Iraq has become a fight between Muslim factions.

A White House spokesman says retreat before victory would be reckless.

1. Harkin saw this coming before the war
I think him and Wellstone were the only two Senators who really understood that the U.S. would get bogged down in Iraq. I remember Harkin comparing it to Vietnam before the war even started.

He's a good guy, and it seems as of very lately, he is trying to find his own voice. He sure balances out that creep Grassley.

4. retreat before "victory" is reckless
are they ever going to define that?

removing WMDS - mission accomplished, as there were none
removing saddam - mission accomplished
holding first elections - mission accomplished

So how is victory defined this week? Do they mean when we win that so-called war on terror?
Or is victory when all the ethnic groups in the Middle East hold hands with each other and sing Kumbaya? Is that what we're waiting for?

6. Shout it from the rooftop--(maybe msm will report this??)
The criticism follows a C-B-S News poll last week that showed 65 percent of respondents disapproved of President Bush's handling of the war, his worst marks since the war started three years ago.

23. I doubt msm covers it. They didn't cover Kerry's Iraq withdrawal plan and
defined Murtha's plan as "cut and run" of course.

My guess is that they'll lump Harkin in with the "cut and run" Dems - they do obey their BushInc masters.

I'm sure they are hopeful that the corporate police state they have installed will ensure they don't really fall from power even if nominal control of the alleged constitutional offices even changes hands.

Bush is like a very strong retarded kid who ran into a glass store in a rampage, and now the parents(American people) have to clean up. We can't pullout because our retard broke everything. We have a responsibility and many more will die if we leave the Iraqi's with their asses up in the air.

25. I am proud of having helped his campaigns here.
Surely he must be thinking of us who put in so many hours for him and who also have been contacting him urgently calling for an end to the war. Perhaps he remembered also his best old-time supporter here who has suffered a stroke and is in a Dubuque hospital, someone who spoke highly of him at our January caucuses before she became so afflicted.

This administration keeps trying to assert that the military can provide a way out of this. All of this while we got our best and bravest out in the sand dunes playing crossing guard with terrorist slime suicide-bombers. I can only hope we kick ass in 2006. (Praying)

33. Where was Senator Harkin when...
Where was his voice of opposition when the Iraq war resolution was voted on. Even Bush senior advised his son not to go to war because it would destabilize the middle-east. Now here we are, three years later, thousands of American service men and women have died, hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians have perished into indistinguishable piles of blood and bone, and U.S. taxpayers are being drained daily for this war.

Why didn't anybody listen to congresswoman Barbara Lee when she voiced her opposition of the war?

One of the result of this was on terrorism has been flagrant violations of human rights both here and abroad. I wanted to share my own personal experience of human right's violations at the hands of the FBI in Sandy Springs, Georgia. Click on the URL.

38. Didn't Harkin also vote against the PATRIOT Act?
I'm starting to gain a new found appreciation for him.

He made a mistake in voting for the resolution earlier , but I see he learned his mistake and understands now that nothing can be accomplished.

39. Not only did he vote against the Patriot Act ...
he also voted against Rice, against Gonzales, against Roberts, and against Alito.

You might think that all Dems did that, but alas they didn't.

Harkin may be one of the ONLY Dem Senators who has a straight record in voting against these neocons Bushco puts up.

I grew up in Missouri, and live in Iowa now. Harkin and Governor Vilsack give me reason to believe that I made the right decision.

Missouri really is the Show Me State ... showing the rest of the country its ass.

Too bad ... there are a lot of great people in Missouri. I'll always be a Cardinal fan, but never a fan of the neocons who have taken over that state.

40. Sen. Boxer has a petition to Rumsfeld for a plan to protect our soldiers
Urge Secretary Rumsfeld to protect our troops from an Iraqi civil war!

Join 39,435 Americans and sign our petition!

In the wake of the February 22nd bombing of the Askariya shrine in Samarra, more than 400 people have been killed and more than 500 injured in Iraq. All Americans, and indeed people around the globe, are increasingly alarmed by this tragic, rapidly escalating violence.

Now our brave men and women in uniform are caught in the middle of an increasingly violent religious conflict between the Sunnis and Shiites in Iraq -- and the situation is in real danger of spiraling into a full-scale civil war.
