Top U.S. general says Army 'stretched'

Associated Press

DIWANIYAH, Iraq - The top U.S. general in Iraq acknowledged Thursday that American forces in this country are "stretched," but he said he will only recommend withdrawals based on operational needs.

Gen. George Casey told reporters he had discussed the issue with Gen. Peter J. Schoomaker on Wednesday and that the Army chief of staff believes he can still sustain the mission in Iraq.

"The forces are stretched ... and I don't think there's any question of that," Casey said. "But the Army has been for the last several years going through a modernization strategy that will produce more units and more ready units."

He reiterated he would only recommend reductions in the more than 130,000-strong U.S. military presence in Iraq based on the situation on the ground.

2. Stretched
I still would like to know why if spend half a trillion dollars on the military every year why we can't keep 130,000 troops in the field? How would we confront a real conflict with someone who has a real military?

4. Like say, Iran, for instance ? Good question. Is it possible that
pResident Dipshit has a good answer for just such a scenario? And I am not saying that Iran poses a threat to us, only that they have a real military unlike Iraq.

3. Meanwhile, back at the ranch....
Donald Rumsfeld talked himself in to a near heart attack insisting that everything was "peachy keen" with the US Armed Forces, condemning the generals and other officers in the field as "ignorant of the larger picture" and asking rhetorically, "Why do these generals hate America? Why do they help our enemies so?"

7. Evidently he hasn't talked to Rummy - Rummy denied everything.
(Which verifies the BushCo rule - everything they say is a lie. Now it's Rummy's lie.)

8. Two reports ordered by Pentagon, dismissed by Pentagon

and WH. Why do they even bother ordering these reports if they are going to ridicule them? Truth means nothing to these bastards.
edit: by the way, Dumsfeld says he "hasn't read the reports". And probably won't.

11. Gotta love the freepers rationale...
Before, it was all about the "liberal media" and how these stories were only out there to discredit the military and hurt Bush, blah blah blah.

Now..

They hear the words directly from the horses mouth and what do they say?

"Well this probably wouldn't have happened if Clinton wouldn't have downsized the military."
"Clinton is a traitor"
"Clinton killed our military"
