Political, corporate leaders at 5-day economic summit
Thursday, January 26, 2006

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) -- China and India touted their booming economies to the world's business and political leaders on Wednesday, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel conceded they posed tough competition as she strives to revive her country's sluggish economy.

Even though Germany was in on computer development from the start, it had failed to keep pace with the growth of the industry, and must build its capacity, Merkel said in the keynote speech to the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum.

"China, India and many other countries have this capability," she said. "We have to face up to the competition."

Fifteen heads of state, top business leaders and celebrities such as U2's singer Bono are attending the session to brainstorm on key issues facing the globe, including high oil prices, Iran's nuclear ambitions, new business models and the shifting balance of power in Asia.

In all, more than 2,340 participants from 89 countries are attending, including 735 who are either chairmen, chief executives or chief financial officers of their companies, the highest figure of corporate leaders ever, Forum officials said....

1. Of course they are

They have large populations with large numbers of people educated in science and technology.

While most on DU will simply say they are cheap labor, the populations are skilled and well educated. They are not having battles over evolution and 'intelligent design' in their schools.

While reigning in the corporations that export jobs is a must, another key issue that must be faced is our standards are woefulyl inadequete and if we continue this way, all those doomsayers that for years claimed Asia would beat us, will be right.

India, for example was the third largest economy last year, right behind the US and China. Along with a workforce that can speak English, a functioning legal system, and being a democracy, they have something going for them. China's main advantage is still the lack of labor restrictions, making it a lot easier to do business with, than even India.

Either way, this should prove to liberals as well that corporations never had Americans' best interest at heart. The only interests they have are those of shareholders. And while I'm as screwed by the jobs leaving the country, I also know that I was never entitled to them. That's a sense of arrogance that us Americans will have to face.

3. only the top 5% of their populace is skilled.
If anything I forsee great class and labor struggle emerging in India.

The majority of their populace is still living in poverty...
