LONDON - Muslim cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri wanted a caliph sitting in the White House and said Hitler was sent into the world because Jews were blasphemous and dirty, a London court heard on Wednesday.

Hamza, 47, is the most high-profile figure to go on trial in Britain on charges of incitement to murder and stirring up racial hatred since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on Washington and New York.

Interest in the case has increased since suicide bombings on London's transport system last July killed 52 people.

Prosecutor David Perry said the Egyptian-born cleric used public meetings at the Finsbury Park mosque in north London and private meetings to incite his followers to kill non-Muslims.

(I orginally used the word to refer to hatred of Jews, but of course the Palestians are also Semitic.) I think the problem is that the Israelis are being oppressive, occupying land that isn't theirs. But they're not trying to exterminate the Palestinians (nor do they say things like the UK cleric did, implying that the mass murder of millions of innocent people was deserved). They're just trying to hold the land. And in fact, they're slowly coming to the realization that they can't really do that any more. They've built their wall, which is in effect annexing about 7% of the West Bank, and it's now expected that the Israelis will dismantle the Jewish settlements on the remaining land -- just as they have already done in the Gaza strip. Of course, the Israelis should end the occupation forthwith, and they are to be condemned as long as they are intransigent on the UN resolutions (242, etc).

So I find it hard to equate the "vicious antisemitism" of the Israelis with the "vicious antisemitism" of that UK cleric. I'm not a defender of the Israelis by any means, but they are not Nazis. They are repressive, and they have been locked in a nasty low-grade war (suicide bombings against targeted killings and the occasional gun battle or tank operation). But none of that compares with what the Nazis did -- we rightly reserve special horror for what the Nazis did to the Jews in the 1940s. This is why the UK cleric's rhetoric is so repellent and alarming.
