Novello for Senate?
Health commish is being courted to run against Hil

ALBANY - Republicans close to Gov. Pataki are trying to recruit state Health Commissioner Antonia Novello to run against Sen. Hillary Clinton, sources told the Daily News.

Novello, a high-profile Latina who was U.S. surgeon general during the first Bush administration, has a strong understanding of federal policies, particularly health care, and would be in good position to battle Clinton on those issues, the insiders said.

A native of Fajardo, Puerto Rico, Novello, 61, was on vacation yesterday and could not be reached for comment. Sources said she was waiting for the dust to settle from Jeanine Pirro's withdrawal from the race last week.

"Any race with Sen. Clinton in it will get huge national attention, and that could tempt Novello, who has a lot of confidence in herself," said one Republican operative.

8. As a matter of fact, yes
Marital status: Divorced after a lengthy marriage to Dr. Joseph Novello, a child psychiatrist who is the brother of Don Novello, best known for playing Father Guido Sarducci on “Saturday Night Live.” The couple had no children.

3. Whatever....
If I were Ms. Novello I'd turn this down...Hillary quite simply is not going to lose no matter who the Republicans put up against her.

7. That's DOCTOR Novello to you, buster. But yes, you're right.
Except, of course, it's always good in a democracy when you have an opposition out there keeping the pols in check.

9. She has major ties to the Bush Family....she was appointed....
...Surgeon-General by Poppy Bush. She was appointed later by Pataki to be the New York State Health Commissioner.

Prior to her stint as Surgeon-General, she was considered to be an expert on AIDS, having traveled back and forth to Africa on a regular basis to see the effects of AIDS for herself. If I were anyone wanting to ask questions that might elicit responses not in keeping with the NeoCon thought process, I would ask her a LOT of questions about AIDS and abortion.

Her former husband is also well-known within GOP circles...it's my understanding that he did some profiling of foreign leaders for the intelligence agencies. The Novello family is Italian, and comes from Steubenville, Ohio, which at one time was a major hub for Mafia activities.

10. I would love to have them battle over Health Care
Create a Debate that stays on page one. America is a disgrace in how it handles the health and welfare of it's citizens...Hillary is well versed on the Health Care Industry...
