Congressman's wife in barroom altercation (Conyers)
http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/12/23/conyers.barfight.ap/index.html

DETROIT, Michigan (AP) -- The wife of Democratic U.S. Rep. John Conyers of Michigan has been accused of punching a woman in the eye during a bar fight.

A spokesman for Monica Conyers, a city councilwoman-elect, confirmed Friday that she was involved in an altercation. But he said Conyers merely defended herself after being attacked by another woman.

The spokesman said Rebecca Mews became upset Tuesday during a birthday celebration for an attorney, who Mews says was her date. While Conyers was speaking with the man, Mews "came over and ... started spewing obscene names" and shoved Conyers, said Conyers' chief of staff, Sam Riddle.

"This woman was obviously drunk, and the councilwoman vigorously defended herself," he said.

10. CLEARLY it was! Some "bad" press for Conyers as he seeks impeachment.
This is desperate bs from cornered pit bulls.

I hope she holds a news conference, and invites the attacker to be there.

I would not rule out a "set up" at all.

They can "set up" an entire multi-billion war- a "bar fight" is child-play.

56. I had to take a peek at an online dictionary to see how off I was.
One lists a reading of "embellished" as "To add ornamental or fictitious details to." That was where I was headed. I didn't take enough time to search for a better term. I mean to express my belief it was wildly spun, exaggerated by tone, insinuation.

They attempted to portray her as a barroom brawler, a semi-primitive, unsophisticated bit of trash, lower class scum. It was an attack on her done slyly. It attempted to demean her.

Nasty bit of sneaky writing. The reporter who came up with this ridicule by innuendo first should be called on it.

Life just happens sometimes. Not everything is a conspiracy.

A similar thing happened with congressman Henry Gonzales a while back in a Denny's in San Antonio. Some guy started in on him when he was over 75 years old I think. Gonzales punched him in the nose and nothing ever came of it.

Gonzales has a life-size statue of himself at SeaWorld in San Antonio.

13. My Advice to Conyers on handling this one:
1) Come straight out and tell it like it is - This was a set-up and his wife was defending herself.

2) Come out and state unequivically that you and your family will not be intimidated or scared off by any attempts to make him look bad or try to sully his reputation.

3) State that this should serve as a warning to any one who tries to take on a Conyers' and attack them: They will be fought off and Conyers' will fight back.

25. I've finally pieced it together!
Rebecca Mews is from the UK and works for a police department. She teaches kids theatre part-time and made a trip in 2003 to Wisconsin to direct the Wisconsin Kids theatre group. She is currently in Detroit on vacation with her boyfriend and sometimes when the moon is full turns into a werewolf - when she scampers off to Germany to suck German blood.

32. This Alderia site is weird.
OK. So I'm naive, but I know German pretty well. It seems to me that site proposes some sort of game or assignation maybe role-playing. Maybe it has to do with role-playing with people who pretend to be elves and people of different races and sort of like treasure hunts or something similar. Maybe it's just a game. Again, I am not familiar with this sort of thing, and I can't really imagine quite what is really going on. People seem to arrange maybe meetings or something. Could this woman have agreed to engage Ms. Conyers on some sort of dare? Was she challenged or paid to make trouble for Conyers? I may be totally misinterpreting this website because I have never heard of anything quite like it. It's also possible that I understand the German but am not familiar enough with the cultural milieu at issue to know what the website is about. Maybe someone who is more knowledgeable about this sort of thing could look at that site. It is really weird. There is something troubling about it to me.

which either had little context originally or lost it in the translation.

I too know but just a little German.

The whole thing strikes me odd, the search results, that there is a place in UK with the same name as the person.

Update: Mews definition "...street lined with building that were originally private stables but have been remodeled as dwellings; "she lives in a Chelsea mews...""

There must be a story, a reason why this woman has the same name as the place, and why the name appears in these odd contexts.

Whether it is all one and the same individual we don't know of course.

by this action Herr Tarein revealed that Miss Rebecca Mews was this werewolf. Mr. Sjolfur Adgierson from the Stadtwoche (a newspaper) then hunted for Miss ....

www.alderia.de:: ads -- diary Sjofur Aegierson
A little later an injured Larios accompanied by a woman who, as the day progressed introduced herself as Rebecca Mews.

Maybe Ms. Mews was investigating the people who were meeting through this website? I have no idea. As I said in an earlier post, this stuff seems really weird to me. I have never seen anything like this, and I don't know what to make of it. Maybe Ms. Mews was investigating the activities on the site. Maybe she went out on a date with someone and they reported about it on this website. I have no idea, but maybe someone else can enlighten me.

23. Here's more from a local source:
Edited on Sat Dec-24-05 12:56 AM by Judi Lynn
~~ snip ~~

According to one source, Mews alleged Conyers arrived at a party at the bar and began asking patrons to buy her a drink. When no one did, she approached a man and said, “I know you're going to buy me a drink,” the source said, citing Mews' police report.

Mews, the man's date, wasn't amused, and the two women began to fight, the report said. The women each say the other struck first.

Riddle criticized police for talking to the media about the incident. He said Conyers hasn't requested special treatment and said that Mews had also attacked a judge earlier that night during the same party.

“When the facts are sifted through, what is going to be discerned is that a judge was attacked and a councilwoman was attacked - pushed - which is a battery,” Riddle said.

Most people in any bar in Chicago would be fighting with each other to buy "da alderman" a drink. I mean, come on.....

Pretty, pretty conspicuous attempt to slur this woman's name. I think it's safe to ASSUME a high profile Democratic Congressman's spouse isn't someone who involves herself in "beatdowns," as one account joyfully trumpeted.

Councilwoman-elect Monica Conyers involved in bar fight

DETROIT - Monica Conyers, a city councilwoman-elect and the wife of Democratic U.S. Rep. John Conyers, has been involved in a bar fight.

A spokesman for Monica Conyers confirmed Friday that she was involved in an altercation early Tuesday at a party at the Crossroads Lounge in Detroit. But he said Conyers merely defended herself after being attacked by another woman.

The other woman involved, Rebecca Mews, told WDIV-TV in Detroit that Conyers threw the first punch and that she never hit back.

Conyers' chief of staff, Sam Riddle, said Mews first became upset when the attorney whose birthday was being celebrated _ and who Mews says was her date _ was dancing with another woman.

Later, when Conyers was speaking with the man, Mews "came over and literally started spewing obscene names," and shoved Conyers, Riddle said.

"This woman was obviously drunk, and the councilwoman vigorously defended herself," he said.

Don't forget how much mileage some enterprising "reporter" tried to get from a story Montana's Democratic Senator Max Baucus's wife had an argument with someone at a garden center store. Whooo. Doesn't that just whip you up into a frenzy, too?

Funny how that story was only out long enough to attempt to portray her as a psychopath, then disappeared as quickly as it arrived. Vanished.

On edit, from a CNN newscast:
A dispute about mulch got out of hand at a D.C. garden center. Now a senator's wife has been charged with assault. Wanda Baucus, the wife of Montana Senator Max Baucus, was arraigned yesterday on a misdemeanor assault charge. She's accused of hitting a woman after they got in an argument while waiting for mulch to be loaded into their cars.

O'BRIEN: That is just so odd.

HEMMER: If it's true, I would agree with you a hundred percent.

O'BRIEN: That's just not right. Mulch?

HEMMER: Mulch rage I think is what they call it.

O'BRIEN: I've argued over many things, but mulch never. HEMMER: A tough country.

BEGALA: Digging into the CROSSFIRE police blotter, if you thought gardening was just a peaceful and pastoral exercise, you weren't at Johnson's Flower and Garden Center here in Washington earlier this week. That's where a woman claims she was attacked by Wanda Baucus, the wife of Montana Senator Max Baucus.

An employee of the flower shop tells CNN the two women got into an argument while waiting for bags of mulch to be loaded into their cars.

BEGALA: Words were exchange and Mrs. Baucus allegedly struck the woman. "The Washington Post" reports she's pleading not guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge.

CARLSON: In her defense, Paul, the retail experience for many people is a very stressful one.

(LAUGHTER)

BEGALA: It was mulch rage.

CARLSON: Yes, mulch rage.

BEGALA: Mulch rage. Rose rage.

(CROSSTALK)

BEGALA: From the left, I am Paul Begala. That's it for CROSSFIRE.

On edit: As if the garbage printed already hadn't been enough, another enterprising paper took the initiative and looked up some previous criminality on Senator Baucus's spouse:
Max Baucus released a statement on Wednesday, saying, "There was a situation involving Wanda last night. We're trying to sort it out, going through the proper channels. I stand by her 110 percent and she has my full support."

This is not the first time Wanda Baucus has attracted media attention recently. A year ago, she was the subject of a gossip column in The Washington Post, after she posted a "Peace is Patriotic" sign in the window of the couple's Georgetown home.

"I want the people in Iraq to have peace - the people whose lives are in turmoil because of the war, the children, their mothers, the farmers, the grandmothers and even the camels that are out grazing," Wanda Baucus told columnist Lloyd Grove.

She is a painter and anthropologist and was concerned about cultural artifacts.

"When we watch the bombing on television, we really don't seem to understand or appreciate that some of these places are sacred. ... I disagree with those who say that Saddam Hussein doesn't think about this," Wanda Baucus told Grove. "He cares about these places and their people."

Wanda Baucus is the senator's second wife and they have been married for 21 years. He has a son, Zeno, from his first marriage.

42. reminds me of my daughter
who almost got in a fight at the bar with the Sheriff's wife because my daughter was not saying glorious things about our esteemed leader. My daughter was at another table speaking with others at her table, and the woman came to her table trying to cause trouble. Thank goodness her hubby stopped her before fists started flying, because his wife was "three sheets to the wind" and my daughter is a 5'4" Tasmanian Devil when provoked. She once worked at a bar and wound up bouncing a few bikers out when necessary. Who says Democrats are wimps?

63. It's a palindrome.
Edited on Sun Dec-25-05 03:49 PM by fshrink
Reads the same both ways. Translated, approximately, from Latin "We turn round and round in the night, consumed by fire". And yes, I'm familiar with the movie and with the people who made itas well. That was way back when...

43. Too early to decide with all the details
but I'm glad Mrs. Conyers clocked her. A man of Conyers intellect wouldn't hang around with just anybody. I'm sure Mrs. Conyers would have preferred to talk things out, but didn't fail to protect herself.
Sour Grapes for Miss Mews. You lost sucker, now go lick your wounds and wise up next time.
:spank:
Just speculation of course.

57. No shame
that's the best way to handle things, just get out there and don't act embarrassed or ashamed. Shamelessness seems to be the way the repukes handle things and so that's what I would do too.

62. A Dem running for office...and SUDDENL a scandal to dwindle her chances?
Think the Repug's would be more original next time?

His wife's running for office aside, Conyer's certainly is at the top of Repug's "let's find something to smear him with" list. Surprised it took so long.
