CNN: 10 Marines killed near Falluja
Marines conducting 'counter-insurgency' operations in Falluja, Ramadi

Friday, December 2, 2005; Posted: 11:22 a.m. EST (16:22 GMT)

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- A roadside bomb Thursday killed 10 Marines while they were on "foot patrol near Falluja," the Marine Corps said Friday.

The Marines were from Regimental Combat Team 8, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).

Eleven Marines were also wounded in the incident, and four of them have not yet returned to duty.

The improvised explosive device was "fashioned from several large artillery shells," the Marine Corps said.

Marines have been conducting "counterinsurgency operations" in the Falluja and Ramadi areas ahead of the December 15 elections....

1. How many more must die?
How many more must die? How the hell are we going to win this? Screw the whole notion of "no good news is ever reported" because there isn't any. As long as a US Soldier dies for every day that we're there, nothing good enough news-wise will ever make up for the lives lost in this mess.

121. With all due respect, what a stupid thing to say. A brave general...
would be one who will speak the trush out loud about our situation in Iraq. Just won't be done by breaking the law, but by finally instisting that our government live by the laws that it passes.

(Plus I don't think you could actually get a bomb in that close to the president.)

9. Bush has told us that every loss of life is tragic...
...so I know that this news will really upset him. Just like Hurricane Katrina upset him as he strummed his guitar and sucked cake off his fingers.

I officially call an end to the "Is Bush worse than Nixon" debate. He is.

"U.S. President George W. Bush joins country singer Cheryl White in a Christmas song at the end of the Christmas Pageant of Peace on the Ellipse in front of the White House in Washington December 1, 2005. "During much of 2004, major parts of Iraq and important urban centers were no-go areas for Iraqi and Coalition forces. Fallujah, Najaf, and Samara were under enemy control. Today, these cities are under Iraqi government control, and the political process is taking hold."

Edited on Fri Dec-02-05 11:57 AM by kenny blankenship
Don't say anything about extending his tour of duty 2 and 3 times. Far as he's concerned he's going on a brief errand--don't let him know different. And second, preface everything with a nice juicy come-on like this: hey kid how'd you like to earn lots of college money? You don't have to do nothing, just stand around with a rifle on your shoulder for a while, talking to girls in the street, Not bad huh! And maybe you drive a truck sometimes--not a truck, a Humvee! You'd like to drive a Humvee wouldn't you? Girls love Humvees. You could use a bunch of money for college am I right? Where you going to get it? Right here is where, just sign your name on that line...

from your link:

Coalition spokesman U.S. Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch strongly disputed reports of widespread insurgent attacks in Ramadi on Thursday. He said that one attack, involving a rocket-propelled grenade, occurred Thursday and that it caused no damage or casualties. (Watch report on propaganda war -- 2:21)

47. I swear, I think these bombs are made from that unprotected ordnance
Remember how the news briefly flared up prior to the election about all the ordnance that wasn't protected in Iraq? At the time I wondered if it had been left unguarded on purpose to create more threats in Iraq and create a more "credible" war scenario. How cynical I have become.

But to the point, the insurgents are learning how to create deadlier bombs. And I think we left the means to do so as a gift right at their feet.

Edited on Fri Dec-02-05 11:29 AM by seemslikeadream
WHAT'S IT GONNA TAKE GEORGIE?

HOW MANY MORE GEORGIE, HOW MANY MORE?

Sam Stone

Sam Stone came home,
To the wife and family
After serving in the conflict overseas.
And the time that he served,
Had shattered all his nerves,
And left a little shrapnel in his knees.
But the morhpine eased the pain,
And the grass grew round his brain,
And gave him all the confidence he lacked,
With a purple heart and a monkey on his back.

There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.

Sam Stone's welcome home
Didn't last too long.
He went to work when he'd spent his last dime
And soon he took to stealing
When he got that empty feeling
For a hundred dollar habit without overtime.
And the gold roared through his veins
Like a thousand railroad trains,
And eased his mind in the hours that he chose,
While the kids ran around wearin' other peoples' clothes...

There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.

Sam Stone was alone
When he popped his last balloon,
Climbing walls while sitting in a chair.
Well, he played his last request,
While the room smelled just like death,
With an overdose hovering in the air.
But life had lost it's fun,
There was nothing to be done,
But trade his house that he bought on the GI bill,
For a flag-draped casket on a local hero's hill.

There's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes,
Jesus Christ died for nothin I suppose.
Little pitchers have big ears,
Don't stop to count the years,
Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios.

John Prine.

Pile the bodies high in Austerlitz and Waterloo Iraq
Shovel them under and let me work--
I am the grass; bush; I cover all.

And pile them high in Gettyburg Baghdad
And pile them high in Ypres and Vedum Mossoul and Al Fallaujah

Two years, ten years, and passengers ask the conductor:
What place is this?

Let me work.

"The names of those killed were withheld pending notification of their relatives, in line with usual military practice"

More likely they were busy figuring out how they could release the story with the best possible spin.

....Fallujah had been a stronghold of the insurgents until U.S. forces, led by Marines, assaulted the city in November 2004. Since then the U.S. military and the Iraqi government have been working to rebuild the city and limit the return of insurgents.

unfortunately unless the democrats get real, this reckless adventure will kill a lot more people, and I do NOT see the dems standing up on this. When you have bill clinton saying that we shouldn't set a timetable, that says everything

I just received a questionaire along with a donation request from the DNC. Individual democrats will get my contributions, but never the DNC or democrats as a whole, until they prove themselves worth it

Alito confirmation will be one of the tests I am looking at, along with the bulk of the democrats coming out and DEMANDING a timetable, and a course of action to get us of Iraq based on that timetable

56. What I still don't get is - If the insurgents want us out, why not stop
attacking? and if there are no attacks, assume we would leave. Then once we leave, they can start acting up again. It doesn't make sense.

It is really scary to think what could happen once we leave, but you will never know until you leave whether we are making it worse or better.

bases there for the last 60 years. No attacks means it just doesn't cost as much for the U.S. to stay there. No way the U.S. is leaving Iraq.

Only way it will start to change is if the people punish the powers that be at the ballot box.

They won't get anywhere as long as the Repuke majority is there to spike those inquiries.

So doing so only makes the Dems look impotent. Best to just wait it out and maneuver for the day when we have the power in Congress to take meaningful action.

For now, Dem leaders should just reinforce the fact that they represent the American people (and by extension the troops) against the corrupt, corporatist, profiteering Republicans who are trading American lives for "face saving".

have a majority for an impeachment, but we will if we start taking strong stands. Polls show that most Americans think that Bush should be impeached if he lied to get us into war.

Look at Reid's Senate takeover and Murtha's stand. People are just waiting for a leader to stand up.

The more pressure on Bush the better. He simply can't handle it.

Democrats look impotent when they sit there with their fingers up their ass while BAD things happen. That's real impotency.

74. Think about what Murtha just said. 2100 had died in Vietnam after 2 yrs.
We could be there for another 10 years and the losses could easily reach the same level as Vietnam. We lost 55,000 in Vietnam from 1965 to 1975. That's how many more - unless we hit the streets and shut the machine down...just like we had to do for the Vietnam War.

87. Yes, but nowhere near the numbers we've had in Iraq for those 2 years
There was not a substantial US ground force in Vietnam until after March 1965. Yes, of course, the so-called advisors and logistics personnel were really in combat, but the landing of the marine expeditionary force in Danang in March 1965 was the first introduction of combat infantry into the country. Moreover, by early 1966 we had over 200,000 in Vietnam, rising to 550,000 at the height of 1968. That's not likely in Iraq.

It is a false comparison, in other words.

83. The death toll had gone down a lot at the end of the month of November
This often seems to happen right after that. That doesn't mean that I am saying they were hiding bodies for a few days to announce a big bunch of deaths after Bush's speech was safely over (although I wouldn't put it past them). Two alternative explanations are:

- a fairly low but constant level of deaths, as is the case in Iraq, will often follow a Poisson distribution, and clustering is a key feature of such a statistical process.

- there may be a tendency to pull troops back into base after a bad run of fatalities, but after a while the war has to go on and deaths go up (or else why have troops there at all?).

85. Dying for elections to cover
Bush's political retreat so that the troops can stay there and die for more oil and political cover for the GOP. Before every election the US troops go out in force to smash any up-building of assaults on the process by the insurgents. In other words they are taking risks and lives to pump up Bush's "victory plan".

So if, eventually, the insurgents go to ground and wait for the American's to pull back into their crusader castles, they will return to sniping and attrition. Unfortunately, the only ones allowed to exercise real choice and ingenuity to alter the pattern are the Iraqi insurgents. Everyone else is hamstrung by by the CIC and his cronies. You know they are waiting for some Lebanon barracks opportunity or some other gambit for bigger scores. Until then, they stick with what works and keep improving. What it teaches the insurgents is that they can take on any force in the world. That must really encourage anyone thinking of trying to take the US place- now that they have thoroughly trained and vetted- the insurgents- but not the "Iraqi armed forces" who are poor even in applying our disastrous strategies.

Sometimes you can isolate the situation. At other times the strings all lead back to the White House. These casualties in the run-up to the elections are all because of Bush and for Bush alone.

92. channeling feelings into protest
I heard about this on my way home from class. It was like a knife to the stomach. All I could think about was the families who will get this most horrible news at Christmas.

And the injured, too, left to go on through life without a limb or limbs, or other injuries that will forever alter their lives.

Tomorrow I will board the peace train to Newark where we will protest the war at the park across from Penn Station.

Tuesday, there is a National Call-In Day to ask our representatives to bring the troops home. Please make a note on your calendar to call: The phone number to reach the Congressional switchboard is (800) 614-2803. The message will be: "I'm calling to ask Congressperson ____ to bring our troops home as soon as possible."

I have been so down about this since I heard the news. When tears or anger rise up, all I can do is think of how to express my feelings through protest.

They just reported on the explosion on the news... complete with vidgame-type graphics.

The report said two Marines had been killed by snipers in Fallujah, and that this platoon had been sent out to suppress that sniper. Looks like the whole platoon walked into a boobytrap set up to get them.

The learning curve on those insurgents/freedom fighters/bad guys/jihadies is getting steeper. Pretty sophisticated strategery.

115. Today's Stripes headline: Ten Marines killed by IED
Ten U.S. Marines were killed near Fallujah in central Iraq in the deadliest single incident involving American troops since August, military officials said Friday.

Another 11 Marines were wounded in the attack Thursday, although seven of them already have returned to active duty, the U.S. military said in a statement.

Later Friday, the military said that a soldier assigned to the 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, died of wounds received Thursday in Ramadi from a rocket attack on his vehicle.

In addition, three 48th Brigade Combat Team soldiers from the Georgia Army National Guard were killed Friday in a vehicle accident south of Baghdad.

The Marines, members of the 8th Regimental Combat Team of the 2nd Marine Division, based at Camp Lejeune, N.C., were on a foot patrol near Fallujah around 5:30 p.m. when several large-caliber artillery shells that were tied together detonated, the military said.
