LIMA, Peru (AP) - Fourteen years ago, the Colina group death squad stormed into a squalid tenement building in Lima's Barrios Altos district and opened fire on partygoers with submachine guns fitted with silencers. Then the hooded gunmen headed to an isolated beach to await instructions.
But the intended strike on Maoist Shining Path collaborators had gone awry, Colina group member Isaac Paquiyauri testified in September. There were no rebel sympathizers at the party.
The Barrios Altos case is one of two notorious paramilitary massacres that pose the most serious legal danger to former President Alberto Fujimori as he fights extradition in neighboring Chile.
Fujimori was arrested early Monday in Chile after ending five years of self-exile in Japan, hoping to launch his political comeback in next April's presidential elections.
