Pro-Bush Democratic mayor falls out of favor in St. Paul
Voters here held what amounted to a referendum on the White House as they picked a mayor Tuesday, with Democratic incumbent Randy Kelly haunted by his 2004 endorsement of President Bush.

Former City Council member Chris Coleman, also a Democrat, held a commanding lead in recent polls. Three independent polls showed voters were primed to fire Kelly, and most cited his support for Bush as the reason.

"It may sound silly, but Kelly was for Bush and I'm not," said retiree Audrey Guith after casting her vote for Coleman.

No sitting St. Paul mayor had lost a campaign since 1974. Kelly had a personal election streak that spanned just as long, covering his quarter-century in the Legislature and first term as mayor of Minnesota's capital city.

Kelly found it impossible to change the topic in the campaign's final weeks. He tried to tout his record of adding affordable housing while keeping property taxes steady, and the mayor sought to paint Coleman as a tax-raiser beholden to public employee unions.

3. Current returns show Kelly losing 69% to 30%.
Voters of St. Paul did NOT appreciate his endorsement of the chimp.

17. Before I found DU, I was the only one I knew who believed this.
Edited on Tue Nov-08-05 11:37 PM by vickitulsa
Even my brother, who has long been slightly left of me, did not really suspect until I brought up the idea to him that Kerry actually did WIN in 2004, that we were robbed outright by the voting machine code controllers and election fraud.

Steve had had very high hopes that JK could win last year, and of course I did too. But I was very worried after the debacle in 2000 ... and I had been tracking the voting machine situation through VerifiedVoting.com for some time before the 2004 election. When the ultimate outcome differed from the exit polling last year, I KNEW WE'D BEEN HAD, bigtime.

It wasn't until I found DU a few months ago, however, that I found there were others who were as convinced as I was that the 2004 election was stolen.

Yesterday my bro and I had a long phone chat about what really happened a year ago, and I told him the whole thing reminded me of some children's story I'd heard about long ago in a philosophy class. Unfortunately my memory is not what it once was; but this fairy tale had to do with a small town or group/community that was suffering under the "leadership" of terrible tyrant, but no one questioned his right to rule because he had been "elected."

The crux of the story was that one person finally protested aloud about those who had voted FOR this cruel tyrant ... and slowly one by one others began to say that THEY had not voted for him. Of course that's when it dawned on the group that the voting had been rigged somehow, and they proceeded to throw the cheater out. But they had endured him for so damn long simply because they had never talked about who they'd voted for among themselves -- a proud tradition in democratic communities that the fraud had counted on, in fact.

Steve then reminded me of that very old beer commercial on TV that ended with the punchline: "... MY uncle, I thought he was YOUR uncle!"

All of which makes me wonder just what will happen if Republicans ever get to talking among themselves and learn that their friends and neighbors they all THOUGHT must have voted for W really didn't, and therefore the eventual results of his "re-election" HAD to be fraudulent........

I could not be more pleased than to see that jackass get his kicked. St. Paul is so blue it is practically indigo (if that is darker) and endorsing Bush was a political death wish. Norm Coleman turnedcoat and got the hell out of Dodge.

He's next to go. Slimebag.

18. Serves Him Right For Being A Dumbass
St. Paul outright rejected Norm Coleman when he ran for governor in 1998 as a turncoat AND when he ran for Senator in 2002. If he couldn't pick up six years worth of clues before endorsing the chimp, he deserves to be sent to pasture.

32. The shame is, Kelly did a good job as mayor
Edited on Wed Nov-09-05 10:53 AM by brentspeak
Why Kelly supported Bush over Kerry is anyone's guess. What a complete moron. Kelly's job performance rating would easily have won him reelection. I hope Coleman can do as good a job as Kelly did in terms of actually running St.Paul.

35. uh, do you live in St. Paul?
Remember this June when we had to call the Minneapolis fire department over because the SPFD was so short-staffed they couldn't fight two three-alarmers at once?

I don't call a marked increase in violent crime, a firehouse closure, and parks and libraries surviving by the skin of their teeth to be good leadership. Kelly was a Quisling of the worst order, sucking up Gov. Timmy and The Brooklyn Teeth, hoping they'd cut him a break. Good riddance to bad rubbish!
