Rabbis attacked by armed settlers
By Shaista Aziz
Tuesday 28 October 2003, 13:46 Makka Time, 10:46 GMT

A group of rabbis from a peace group in Israel have been attacked by armed settlers.

Rabbis, from the peace group Rabbis for Human Rights (RHR), were attacked by five armed settlers. Some of the men had their faces covered when they threatened to attack the rabbis with clubs.

Rabbi Ascherman told Aljazeera.net that he would not be deterred from assisting Palestinians in protecting their lives and land and that he felt anger and embarrassment towards the settlers.

''These people believe that their Torah tells them to vandalise land and abuse Palestinian people. I will continue to come here day after day to tell these settlers that they are wrong and that the Torah doesn't teach us Jews to behave in this way''.

Thank God for brave people like these Rabbis.

Edit: I hit the wrong button :silly:

2. Not a big fan of fundamentalists myself
This Arab-Israeli conflict will nearly drive a person nuts. I have a class on it and keeping up with daily events and reading the history makes you just want to grab these people, shake them around and say: "What the hell are all you idiots doing!"

Those Rabbis deserve better than what they got that's for sure. Madness. Frustrating.

4. It doesn't take a fundamentalist.
Yes, these settlers may have been fundamentalists; but purely-secular people can also want to steal others' lands and make them their own. Secular Zionism has also exhibited such an intent.

8. Sure, but it's the fundie stuff that is the GLUE
that provides the settlement. So it's neither here nor there what a settler may believe religiously.

3. These Rabbis give me faith and hope for Israel.
Just like we have in the U.S., Israel has its "fundies", and they are just as insane. In fact, I think we have a couple of them here at DU who would support the settler's side.

Peace will only come to that tortured land, when men of peace are allowed to embrace, and men of hate and violence are silenced and removed.

7. "Face covered ?"
I wonder if any of these thugs with their faces covered are actually behind some of the acts that the Palestinians are being blamed for?

9. Those settlers are dangerous
One of them, or their supporters killed Izaac Rabin a few years back. If I were one of the rabbis, I'd watch my back.
I still say we cut off all aid to both the israelis and the palestineans until they decide to stop killing each other.
