Baghdad Deputy Mayor killed in Drive-By Shooting
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20031028/wl_nm/iraq_killing_dc&cid=574&ncid=1480

<snip>BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The deputy mayor of Baghdad was killed in a drive-by shooting Sunday night, officials in the U.S.-led coalition occupying Iraq (news - web sites) said Tuesday.

They said Faris al-Assam was near his home in the capital when the killers struck.

His death was a further setback to the coalition, which saw a rocket attack on its main compound Sunday and four suicide bombings Monday which killed 35 people and wounded 230.

"Faris was absolutely committed to the welfare of the citizens of Baghdad and the future of the city," said Hank Bassford, the Baghdad region coordinator for the U.S.-led administration.

1. Wholly shit
This is not looking good at all.

First, there was a female councilmember that was killed AND now the deputy mayor? The US shouldn't have gone there in the first place. We obviously don't have the legitimacy in the region.

2. Lessons of Vietnam Were Ignored
We don't know as much about non-Western societies as we thought. However, they appear to be just as nationalistic as any Western society. Vietnam was a loser. Iraq is a loser.

13. Bizzarro world Iraq
Bush wants us all to know that there is an alternate universe where an Iraq exists where all the citizens throw us flowers and daily bombings are proof of "progress". This man is deranged and diseased to the core, to misquote Henry II "will no one rid me of this meddlesome war criminal?"

15. And... "Newspaper Editor Fatally Shot in Mosul"

MOSUL, Iraq -- An editor of an Iraqi weekly newspaper was shot and killed Tuesday on the roof of his office's building, police said. His daughter said he had been threatened because of his writings.

Two men followed Ahmed Shawkat, editor of the independent "Without Direction," to the roof -- where he went to make a phone call -- and one of them shot him, police said.
snip>
"He used to write against the resistance, against the Americans, against the local government and the former government. He had integrity," the daughter said. "Obviously some people didn't like the fact that he ... had a view and a principle."

19. Is this the guy CNN had on a TV interview? Was this an English newspaper
published in Iraq. He said he's giving it away free to spread goodwill.

(But I don't think anyone has any money to pay for it in the first place. And I bet the US tax payers are the ones really paying for it.)
