White House expresses pleasure, but caution, about North Korean pledge to end nuclear program

WASHINGTON – The White House is pleased with North Korea's agreement to end its nuclear weapons program, President Bush's spokesman said Monday, while expressing caution about whether Pyongyang will make good on its promises.

"North Korea now needs to live up to the agreement," said White House press secretary Scott McClellan. "That means dismantling their nuclear programs and allowing for verification to demonstrate that it has ended its nuclear activities."

After two years of talks with the United States and four other nations, North Korea agreed Monday to stop building nuclear weapons and to allow international inspections. In exchange, the country will get energy aid, economic cooperation and security assurances.

Asked whether the United States can trust the North Koreans to carry out their promises, McClellan said: "That's why I said the implementation is going to be key, and we will see as we move forward."

1. Can BUSH be trusted???

Seems to me that Bush has broken more laws and more agreements recently than North Korea...

2. This is bullshit, they caved, gave N. Korea what they have been asking for
all along. And got similarly worthless promises in return.

3. i agree..
For a while, the U.S. didn't want to give the very normal and very legitimate respect of sovereignty of North Korea that they have been wanting. They may have not gotten a non-aggression pact, but they got the next best thing: an agreement by the U.S. not to invade and to respect their sovereignty. And the agreement is done with all of North Korea's partners.

The NK's played a good game of brinksmanship, and they won.

Not that I'm saddened. I don't like North Korea's regime or its cultish leader, but leave em alone. They haven't done anything to us. As long as they're not screwing with us, respect their sovereignty and move on.

4. It was a stupid policy in the first place.
This might mean that we will be leaving the Korean Peninsula,
finally, after 50 years, as it suggests that the sabre-rattling
that was being done to shore up the necessity for our presence
there is being abandoned.
