Left for Dead with Killers in a Flooded, Stinking Jail
Left for dead with killers in a flooded, stinking jail
By Mark Coultan in Clarksville, Tennessee
September 11, 2005
The Sun-Herald

Mr McDonald shared his small prison cell in New Orleans with two men, all of them using a bucket for a toilet. After a while, they put a blanket over it in an attempt to reduce the stench. "We got virtually left for dead," he said.

<snip>

Soon after the hurricane hit, prisoners rioted; not to escape, he said, but to get to somewhere safe. They used trolleys to break down doors and lit fires using toilet paper.

<snip>

He said he had to wade through the polluted water despite having a weeping wound from a hernia operation. He had heard a story that two prisoners had drowned in a basement holding cell.

<snip>

Because of overcrowding, he was forced to endure days in the blistering sun. The men were thrown peanut butter sandwiches by the guards. He slept on a sheet on the ground.

1. One cause of 'riots':
Soon after the hurricane hit, prisoners rioted; not to escape, he said, but to get to somewhere safe. They used trolleys to break down doors and lit fires using toilet paper.

When guards eventually returned to the jail, Mr McDonald had to wade through chest-deep water to leave the prison, ducking into the water as they passed through doorways.

"It was scary because you didn't know what was in there," he said. "There could have been lockers and trolleys and chairs all floating around, but you couldn't see in the pitch-black darkness.

"You couldn't see an inch in front of your face."

2. If you can't be good
be careful and stay out of jail.
Damn! And had Bu$hie acted more quickly maybe there would have been evacuation of prisoners.

3. They don't think you're human either. Everybody hates....
but an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind.
