Taff fraud case is filled with puzzling questions
Aug. 19, 2005

It just doesn’t add up.

At least it doesn’t for some of the friends of Adam Taff and John D. Myers, indicted Wednesday on charges of wire fraud.

The case revolves around a $1.2 million home in Lake Quivira where Taff and his wife have been living for the past year.

Myers, who founded the mortgage company where Taff worked for a year between his 2002 and 2004 congressional bids, sold him the house at 177 Hillcrest West. The January 2004 transaction allegedly involved a doctored check and closing statement and $300,000 that briefly came out of Taff’s campaign account and then went back in.

Seems Taft has a few more problems then just forgetting about a couple of golf games? Misuse of campaign funds is a violation of election law, even if it was for just a minute.

1. I think you've gotten some folks mixed up. Robert Taft is the
Governor of Ohio who was just convicted of ethics violations involving golf. Not Taff. As much as I dislike Taft, these aren't the same criminals.

4. Taff is our local fraud case.
It is a strange case. And it gets even stranger as the daily articles come out.

Everyone is making excuses for these guys - they were just so nice that they would never do anything wrong on purpose.

Odd.

6. Thank you
Its kind of like the article says. Taff ran for office and the race was very close - he's a Republican newcomer - very straight - navy fighter pilot - the whole bit.

He went to buy a house and I guess he used $300,000 from the campaign fund. Well, somehow they ended up with a fraudulent HUD on the sale of the house - showing $300,000 earnest money dep. But according to them the man making the mortgage is so nice that he can never say no to anyone so he refused the check and they had a verbal deal for a 300,000 second mortgage.

It just gets wierder every time I hear about it. It was all just a tragic mistake by these best guys in the world.
