...
Labor Secretary Elaine Chao outlined key elements at a gathering organized by the state and Cleveland-area restaurant associations, emphasizing that the overhaul remains a President Bush priority when Congress returns next month...

Jon Romano, a spokesman for Americans United to Protect Social Security, said most Americans aren't buying the president's plan, despite Bush's drive to build support.

"It's privatization, plain and simple," Romano said. "It replaces guaranteed benefits with guaranteed risk."...

Chao's Cleveland appearance came a day after the 70th anniversary of legislation establishing Social Security. A Clevelander, retired motorman Ernest Ackerman, in 1937 became the first person to receive a Social Security payment...

2. Is the SSA an arm of the GOP?

Is the SSA an arm of the GOP?

In a February 2005 report, the Minority Staff of the United States House of Representatives Committee on Government Reform investigated the apparent change in the Social Security Administration public communications practices under the current administration. Recent communications suggest the SSA has modified its communications to build public support for President Bush’s Social Security privatization plan. The information in the PDF below is a summary of the findings of the investigation and additional evidence of the politicization of the Social Security Administration and the systematic shift toward the use of scare tactics in communications with the public...

Social Security Anniversaries Through the Years: 70th Gets the Shaft

At a recent meeting, the Social Security Administration informed their employees that they had no plans to conduct any celebration for the 70th anniversary of the August 14, 1935 signing of legislation by Franklin Delano Roosevelt that created Social Security...

4. He won't stop until he's screwed over every American and
destroyed any hope we might have of living in dignity in our old age.
Lets face it there's no fun in being super rich if other people are still living in comfort and security.

6. Lame duck woes...
Losing at the polls, losing Iraq to the insurgents, GWB is desperate for a win, any win. As a result, I fear we face a dangerous 3 years with this madman at the helm.

... about this president's state of mind. His SS plan is not only dead, it is buried 6 feet under and not even worm food any more.

And yet he continues to blather on about it as though if he keeps "catapulting the propaganda" 75% of the population will suddenly change their minds. Or that Congress is going to cut off their noses just to make him happy.

Delusional is almost too mild a word to use.

9. Why should he be discouraged, he's gotten everything he's asked for so far
Edited on Tue Aug-16-05 06:51 AM by ToeBot
He may get overturned on stem cell research, but thats still up in the air. There are a few judges that didn't make the first draft; they haven't renominated yet, but he still has several years left to try. It will be interesting to see if Bush is willing to sacrifice some of his own to sabotage Social Security. He personally has nothing to lose by trying.

edit: spelling

19. I relly don't worry about this..
.... the Congress KNOWS that retribution in the form of being booted from their jobs by their constituents is the only thing they will get if they vote for this "reform".

They are going to do anything and everything to keep any such proposals off the floor because they cannot vote either way on them, it is truly a lose/lose situation.

Bush** has gotten away with stuff because Americans didn't really care that much. Touch SS and see how they care.

22. Among the MANY reasons Elaine Chao is one of the WORST
people to be in the position of Labor Secretary. Heavily GOP and corporate-connected, staunchly pro-offshore outsourcing, distinguished fellow with the Heritage Foundation . .. I don't know, isn't this woman supposed to be overseeing the needs of, what's that group, oh yeah . . . THE LABOR OF THIS COUNTRY?

14. Bush & Co want people to think Social Security is a failure, needs fixing
It is maddening how they have forced the Social Security Administration to totally revamp its public information. After over 6 decades of PR efforts reassuring Americans that it will be there for them and is a successful program, SSA has been forced by Bushco to revamp their literature in a concerted effort to undermine the faith of Americans in the underlying soundness and benefits of the program. Democrats in Congress need to raise more of a stink over such a cynical political propaganda strategy aimed to convince Americans that radical privatization is needed.

18. Let everyone know: Republicans are trying to end Social Security.
Bu*h's crusade to destroy Social Security is a very unpopular issue, and tying all republicans to Bu*h's attempts to destroy Social Security could result in Democrats regaining more than a few seats in Congress.

Most Americans believe that privatizing Social Security is insanely fiscally irresponsible.

Democrats are clearly the "good guys" here, protecting America's future. Let's make a big push to capitalize on this fact.

Busheister would rather have his wealthy Wall Street cronies rolling in the cash!:grr:

He doesn't care if anyone becomes poor and/or ill in their Senior years.

I guess he would rather see all of these homeless elderly people walking the streets
because anyone who does not have money is worthless to him!
