Texas governor suggests gay veterans should leave state
Gay groups demand Perry apologize
By STEVE KOVAL
Jun 8, 2005
Washington Blade

Texas Gov. Rick Perry suggested that gay veterans unhappy with the proposed anti-gay constitutional amendment should move elsewhere.

"I'm going to say Texas has made a decision on marriage and if there's a state with more lenient views than Texas, then maybe that's where they should live," the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Perry said Sunday.

Perry's comments were in response to a question during a news conference about what he would tell gay war veterans returning from Iraq.

Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, a group for gays in the military, today joined calls by the Lesbian & Gay Rights Lobby of Texas for Perry to apologize.

54. Nope. Perry would probably just move gays into a ghetto, if he could...
"...(Perry) tried all kind of methods to make the (gays) leave (Texas). First they were humiliated. If you looked (gay) the (right wingers) on the streets would call you names. (Gays) were forbidden to go to certain places...

"We were told not to buy in (gay) shops. But most people didn't care and bought anyway.... So the (right wing) thought of a more drastic measure. One day they smashed the windows and looted the (gay) stores. In (Austin) it was certainly not the deed of the people but was done by the (GOP) (a (right wing) organization) on a party order..."

110. Isn't it Odd...
We, the "left liberals" are called "extremists," and stereotyped as "radicals," and "violent" as demonstrators, when in factual reality it's the other McVeigh-Mentality of the other side.

All in the name of poor Jesus. They make me sick. Sincerely sick!

Reminds one of the poor young Gay guy, strapped to that fence till he died; that was after they beat him to death.

Where was that at? Texas, maybe? I know it was out west somewhere. I no longer see it in reruns in A&E as they once did. Broke my heart.

3. Sadly, that may rap up reelection for him
This is definitely one of those "if you ain't like us, you can move to Russia" kind of places. Ron Kirk was leading in the polls for US Senate here in 2002 going into the final days, and the Republicans launched a phone campaign claiming he was for gay rights. He got so trounced in the regions where they ran the scam that he lost statewide. (Although I'm still convinced there was more fraud in that election than in Florida in 2000.)

is stupidity. For all of Perry's bluster, he's a pretty bright guy. That makes Texans and Republicans uncomfortable with him. They much prefer the stupidity of Bush. That's where Kay Bailey really has a chance.

103. Beg to differ
You might flame me, but I do not recall Kirk being ahead. And even if a poll showed him ahead in the Senate race in the election's final days, the size of his loss would lead me to believe the poll was not accurate. Point: It wasn't even close.

Kirk was a friend to big business types as Mayor of Dallas and did not inspire Democrats much more than the DINO running for Gov. on the same ballot. It was another example of our state party leadership's failed policy of seeking Rep. lite candidates.

He's an old-style conservative, not one of the neocons. Kirk was moderate & well liked.

Electronic voting debuted in Texas in 2002. First areas converted: Harris County (Houston) & Austin. Two of the most liberal areas in the state.

62. Nah, Perry's actually very bright
He's just trying to hide it because Texas Republicans don't like bright candidates. All this religious bluster is just an act for Perry. He's just pandering to his constituency, because he made a few blunders early on, and is trying to make people forget about him.

Our one chance in Texas is that people really aren't as dumb as the Republicans want them to be, and just maybe they'll push the whole stupidity thing too far. They did that in 90 when they ran a cowboy against Ann Richards, and it backfired and got her elected. There's an outside chance it could happen that way again.

But Perry's not dumb. He's just an ass.

93. Well, I haven't heard that rumor substantiated, but I think you are on to
something.

First, about the rumor. It started a while back when there was a rumor in the media that an attractive governor was about to be outed, and that he was battling his wife over a divorce. The rumor never named Perry, but a lot of people jumped on the "Perry is gay" bandwagon. Not long afterwards, the New Jersey governor admitted he was gay, so a lot of people assumed the rumors were about him.

Perry's Leuitanent Governor, David Dewhurst, has long been rumored to be gay, and I've met people that work around him who can even name a man in Houston he's been with a long time--who knows if they are right, but they are convinced. So it's possible the rumor was never about Perry, but that wishful thinking and confused identity made it about him.

Either way, the rumor made the rounds, and people now think of Perry that way, so I think you are right, he is trying extra hard to be anti-gay, and it has something to do with the rumor. It also has to do with shrewd, though disgusting, politics. The Republicans here in the last few years have switched from smearing Dems with abortion to smearing them with gay rights. Perry can now say he stood up for morals in this state, and any Democratic opponent has to either say "But you were wrong," in which case he gets labeled as a "gay lover," or he has to go along with Perry's actions, in which case he angers Dems.

So Perry kills a lot of birds with this one stone, and he makes it very hard for a Democrat to campaign against him. If he had signed this bill quietly, it might not become an issue, so he has done it in a way that everyone will remember, so they will talk about it during the election.

As I said, he's a smart man, and extremely crafty at politics. Ask Jim Hightower, who underestimated him and lost.

70. Well, since I have never voted for a Republican of any sort
for any office since I began voting in 1970, I prefer to think of neither of them as MY governor, but I understand what you're saying.

Reiterate: Perry attended my old alma mater, and he is dumb as bricks, homework done by others while he tended to yell practice. Other signs of dumbness: he actually feels entitled to treat others like shit, due to his superior upbringing and heartrending middle-class to upper-middle class economic journey (rags to riches would be stretching it a bit, ya?)

See how smart you think this is: The public schools of Texas will cease to operate October 1 without a satisfactory school finance plan, which the Lege did not pass, and now Perry, the only person on earth who can call a special session, won't do it, saying he prefers the courts to handle it. There won't be a bit of resentment when millions of kids and hundreds of thousands of teachers and staff have no place to go October 1, and no paychecks, either, right?

9. More on Perry's comments from yesterday's Fort Worth Star-Telegram
Perry also ceremonially endorsed the already passed resolution calling a November election on a definition-of-marriage constitutional amendment. Preaching from behind the official seal of the governor of Texas, Parsley said gay Americans cause 60 percent of syphilis cases and live barely half as long as heterosexual Americans. He argued against "sacrificing our children on the altar of the sexual lust of a few."

Later in the school library, Perry was asked in a news conference how he would tell Texas gay and lesbian war veterans that they can't come home from war in Iraq and get married. Perry said if they don't like Texas law, they can just leave.

"I'm going to say Texas has made a decision on marriage," he said, "and if there's a state with more lenient views than Texas, then maybe that's where they should live."

In other words, Texas now welcomes politicking TV preachers from Ohio, but not our own native sons and daughters who might want to live lawfully in commitment with legal recognition.

What's next? The Rick Perry Prayer Cloth?

It included a law that parents must give written permission for girls under 18 to have abortions. There already WAS a parental notification law. But girls were allowed to go to a judge for permission if their situation warranted it. Further restrictions on late term abortions were also included.

www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/06/06/texasbill.church.ap/

Even some Texas Republicans are tired of this fool. The primary election for Governor may be interesting. If Kaye Bailey Hutchison actually announces she will run, people have been predicting the conflict may damage Texas Republicans. Let's hope!

130. Gays should boycott Texas
Its been effective in Cincinnati

In fall 2001, Stonewall held a press conference calling for the Olympic Games not to come to Cincinnati because of Article 12. This press conference came on the heels of nearly nine years of sanctions Stonewall called against convention business in Cincinnati. Stonewall's boycott of Cincinnati cost the city over $64 million.

You would think he'd be a lot smarter than to say these things to what I'm sure are decorated vets, at least some of them. Oh, and wasn't there something in the campaign about wartime service records and whatnot?

So Republicans claim Dems are the ones who don't support the military, and then a Republican turns directly around and tells a bunch of gay vets they should move out of state if they don't like the treatment they're getting from the state- a state they fought and sometimes were wounded or killed trying to preserve.

Why doesn't the media underscore this hypocrisy?

Yeah, he's a real small guy. Volunteered for the Marines when he was 17 or 18. He was one of the guys who'd go into a tiny hole in the ground with nothing but his sidearm, knife, and a flashlight. He'd do it so that the enemy couldn't pop out from behind his platoon and get them in the back. He'd do it to keep his fellow Marines safe, if just for one more night. He saw and did terrible things at the behest of his country.

Rick Perry can suck my uncle's dick as far as I'm concerned.

The Beltway Democrats don't waste their time down here.

In 2002 Texas Democrats originally invited a couple of national Dems--I think Kerry and Gephardt--to the state convention, but a couple of the statewide candidates protested that them libruls would hurt the Dem image in Texas, so they were uninvited. National Dems haven't much cared about Texas since then.

You hear stories about national Dems like Hillary and Kerry coming down here and collecting a ton of money from Dems? That's why. There aren't that many Dems down here worth giving money to.

88. No, no, it's far, far worse than you think
This only shows that no matter what we ga people do, no matter our heroics for our country, no matter our service record, no matter if we obey the laws; we will always be reviled and outcast by certain people. I'm afraid that group is growing. The new Pope's recent comments, for example, will only inflame them. Then there's this:

http://www.laweekly.com/ink/05/29/features-ireland.php

"Spurred on by a biblical injunction evangelicals call “The Great Commission,” and emboldened by George W. Bush’s re-election, which is perceived as a “mandate from God,” the Christian right has launched a series of boycotts and pressure campaigns aimed at corporate America — and at its sponsorship of entertainment, programs and activities the Christers don’t like.

And it’s working. Just three weeks ago, the Rev. Donald Wildmon’s American Family Association (AFA) announced it was ending its boycott of corporate giant Procter & Gamble — maker of household staples like Tide and Crest — for being pro-gay. Why? Because the AFA’s boycott (which the organization says enlisted 400,000 families) had succeeded in getting P&G to pull its millions of dollars in advertising from TV shows like Will & Grace and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. P&G also ended its advertising in gay magazines and on gay Web sites. And a P&G executive who had been given a leave of absence to work on a successful Cincinnati, Ohio, referendum that repealed a ban on any measures protecting gays from discrimination was shown the door.

“We cannot say they are 100 percent clean, and we ask our supporters to let us know if they discover P&G again being involved in pushing the homosexual lifestyle,” growls the AFA’s statement of victory over the corporate behemoth, “but judging by all that we found in our research, it appears that our concerns have been addressed.” The Wall Street Journal reported on May 11 that “P&G officials won’t talk publicly about the boycott. But privately, they acknowledge the groups turned out to be larger, better funded, better organized, and more sophisticated than the company had imagined.”

More and more people hate us than ever before, because people who are authority figures are saying that that's okay. That's fine. Go ahead, hate these people, becuse they deserve your hate.

So I have to ask myself just where my line in the sand is. I have to ask myself, "is it time, yet, to get a license to carry concealed? Is it time, yet, to arm myself?"

I would try to change things for the better for myself and all other gay people, but I can't. It's like trying to use a teaspoon to bail out a leaky canoe. Worse, no matter what I do or how I prove it, as the Governor of Texas shows, it won't work well enough to make a difference.

It doesn't matter that I don't want to join the military, because even if I did, I know from this man's comments that my sacrifices were I to do so would be completely in vain. My joining up, ever, would quite literally be for nothing; even were I to save an entire platoon singlehandedly, that would count for nothing in the face of what gender I sleep with.

Oh, we all can crow about how "not everyone is like that" and "we here at DU don't feel that way" but the fact is, those statements don't do anything. Those statements don't keep me safe, or keep people from saying or doing things that are designed to do me and others like me harm.

I don't know how to fix it; there seems to be little that can be done but to just let them do what they want to do, because they're going to whether I like it or not. Maybe someday perceptions will change, but I despair of ever seeing that truly happen in my lifetime.

105. Are You Nuts?
Or just not paying attention?

He just gutted worker's comp so we small businesses still get to pay high fees (my worker's comp fees went up, not down) and injured workers are now out of luck if they suffer more than a minor injury.

We have record deficits and we're not through, even though S. got us to pass that 20 million dollare bond.

The RNC and the SF chron and Sac Bee created a tempest in a teacup so that they could forse Kevin Shelley out and replace him with a Republican sec. of State who will probably be too naive to keep the voting machine companies from pulling a fast one on us.

S. is going to put us another 70-80 million in the hole for a special election that he needs to have happen in 2005 so he won't be bound by the spending limits that will be in force in 2006.

He wants to redistrict so that Republicans will pick up seats. The only way he can redistrict in California and have that happen is by gerrymandering or outright rigging the vote.

S. wants to break the unions by making it harder for the union leadership to use the dues for political purposes.

He wants to break the influence of the CalPers by turning it into a 401k instead of a pension system.

S.'s cronies are going to put up a bill to amend the state constitution to deny gays the right to marry

He's refusing to fully fund the schools even though he's adding funding for roads due to the road building lobby. If I had to choose between roads and schools, I'd vote for schools. We don't need to be widening any more roads in California anyway, it just induces more traffic and more sprawl.

He also said on Jay Leno's show that if the CA Supreme Court rules in favor of same-sex marriages, that he's fine with it.

57. This has gone way, way too far
This is just the latest outrage committed by a Republican Party drunk on hatred. How DARE that little piece of shit have the nerve to tell ANY person, gay or straight, that they can just go to another state if they don't like it?

Every day, we read about the conditions in Iraq, and Afghanistan, and feel our spirits sink lower and lower, as we consider that these wars , especially in Iraq, did not have to be fought. We know that our soldiers, and Iraqi citizens, are being killed and maimed to satisfy the greed and arrogance of Bush, and the neocon thugs who are enabling him destroy us.

Now our returning vets are told that just maybe they aren't welcome here, and should leave. In my opinion, this rises to the level of a hate crime. If the governor of a state makes such a pronouncement, doesn't it follow that the rightwing fundies will take that as approval to display their hatred in physical ways?

I have seen so many times lately, where the nut jobs are pushing, pushing, pushing their hate filled agendas, whether it is in public school, government, military service,or in simply recognizing each other's right to pursue happiness in their own way. In many cases, the articles have stated that they now feel "emboldened", due to having control of all three branches of government.

I was born in, and live, in, Texas, and to have any Texan, but even worse, the governor of the state, make such hate filled statements enrages me. Each and every one of our democratic leaders needs to call Perry on this right away, forcefully, and without apology.

We bleed and die in Iraq, and the monkey in the White House says that our brave soldiers are fighting for our freedoms. Now, when some of the men and women who enlisted, prepared to serve their fellow citizens return, they are insulted, rejected, and belittled.

None of us must let up on calling Perry, our congresspeople, and news organizations, and we must not let go of this without a very public apology. I can only imagine what the veterans must feel; can you imagine the parents, or partners, of the ones who gave their life in the desert, and hearing such a statement?

We are no longer America. Perry, Bush, and the rest of them have no right to even utter the words liberty, and democracy, much less make shockingly barbaric statements like this. To all my gay and lesbian friends, I'm sorry that you have to withstand this kind of garbage and abuse.

Bush and the Republicans for years to come...It was a tool used by the Bush administration to get him elected but the people are beginning to see the light, it one thing to deny marriage etc. but to openly tell Gays to leave the state that will anger many..and the more people they make angry the better for our side....just my 2 cents..

99. Meanwhile, our great state can't take care of real business
School funding bill - can't get done.

A fair and equitable tax system, namely property taxes - can't get done.

Making state colleges affordable by capping once again the amount of tuition state schools charge (which the Republicans eliminated in the last session) - can't get done.

Addressing the need of the many folks here in Texas without adequate health insurance - can't get done.

Restoring the Texas Tomorrow Fund which the Republicans eliminated in the last session - can't get done.

Raising teacher pay to the national average - can't get done.

But hey, queers won't be able to marry, and our cheerleaders in Texas high schools will stop their sexual gyrations. No wonder folks are laughing at us.

They could maybe win an election if they listened to the ideas here. They could learn how to frame their arguments in effective ways, for one thing.

But besides that, you're exactly right - the hypocracy of the Governor's statement is absolutely dispicable. I feel like boycotting that state over this. At the moment I wouldn't set foot in that state if you paid me. It's a shame for any democrats living there to have to be represented by such a revolting and hateful "leader." This is beyond the usual scandelous-ridden tacticts of the Republican party. Being in a power-position and telling citizens to 'leave if you don't like us amending the constitution to discriminate against you' is a travesty to our entire country. This has escalated from a local issue to everybody's problem, in my opinion.

135. Texas Governor Suggests Gay & Lesbian War Veterans Should Leave State
http://releases.usnewswire.com/GetRelease.asp?id=48516

I'm not sure if this is a reputable source. I've never heard of usnewswire until I got this via e-mail.

This is just beyond disgusting. Will someone in the media now ask some prominent Republicans if they support Gov Perry. I mean, he is a Republican leader isn't he.

"Texas Republican Governor Rick Perry on Sunday insinuated the state's lesbian, gay and bisexual war veterans should leave the state if they are unhappy with a recent anti-gay marriage amendment introduced there, according to the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN).

During a news conference held in a Fort Worth church, Perry was asked what he would tell Texas gay and lesbian war veterans returning home from war about the law. Gov. Perry responded, according to the Fort Worth Star Telegram, by saying that "Texans made a decision about marriage and if there's a state that has more lenient views than Texas, then maybe that's a better place for them to live."

Servicemembers Legal Defense Network today joined calls by the Lesbian and Gay Rights Lobby of Texas for Gov. Perry to apologize. "More than 66,000 lesbian and gay veterans make their home in Texas," said Sharra E. Greer, SLDN's director of law and policy. "Their service has defended the freedom of every Texan, including Governor Perry. The Governor's remarks dishonor their service and he should immediately apologize. We should be thanking these brave men and women, not asking them to leave."

154. Texas Gov Perry to gays: Don't like the new law... move!
from The Dallas Voice

FORT WORTH — Texas Governor Rick Perry, at a bill-signing ceremony Sunday at an evangelical school, suggested that gays and lesbians who don’t approve of a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marrages and civil unions should move to “a state that has more lenient views than Texas.”

<snip>

Two-thirds majorities in both the House and Senate approved the resolution during the legislative session that ended May 31. Perry said he signed it as a show of support. Voters will have the final say in a ratification vote set for the Nov. 8 ballot.

<snip>

When a television reporter asked him how the proposed amendment might affect gay veterans in Texas — one of the groups protesting outside the Calvary school — Perry replied, “Texans made a decision about marriage, and if there’s a state that has more lenient views than Texas, then maybe that’s a better place for them to live.”

EWWWWWW!
Source #1: "I attended a political meeting this morning at which it was reported that Governor Perry's wife has left the Governor's Mansion in Austin. The alleged reason was that she found the governor in bed with another man. If true, discussions of gay issues are likely to take a higher profile in Texas in the coming weeks."

Source #2: "I did not want to say anything until it hit the mainstream press, but I have known about that for more than a week."

Source #3: "...the rumors about Perry and Secretary of State Connor (the alleged paramour) have been "swirling" since January. The governor's office is being very evasive."

172. That's why he's doing this, to overcome the rumors
Whether they are true or not (just about every Texas politician, either party, is rumored to be gay and has at least three witnesses who will swear to it), Perry is trying hard to link himself to an anti-gay movement before he gets labeled as gay. Republicans like this particular accusation--they accused Ann Richards of being the lesbian lover of the Roe v Wade lawyer, they accused Ron Kirk of planning to legalize gay marriage.

Gay marriage is the new anti-abortion for Texas Repubs. Abortion stopped working as a wedge issue, so now it's gays.

And, "lefties" is a term used by Robert Novak. We prefer "progressives".

You are uncomfortable having them around. You use "i" uncapitalized. There could be more issue here than we thought.

Perhaps gays don't want to live near people who are close-minded? Maybe we should have law passed like that...to remove closed-minded bigots...and....oh wait....this is STILL the United States and GAYS and BIGOTS should be able to live where ever they want!!! If the bigots have a problem, I suggest they find another place to live!

202. You are obviously not a progressive by any stretch of the word
This place is called the Democratic Underground, in case that fact (like so many others) had escaped you. Read the forum rules. This isn't a playground for Rethuglican hate-mongers. If you want to learn something, you can learn plenty just by reading -- no need to write and antagonize what you KNOW to be a pro-gay rights group.

If you support Bush** and his ideas about who is entitled to democracy, you're a fascist in my book. The State is always right; individual freedoms are suppressed in favor of jingoistic muscle-flexing; censorship, bigotry, propaganda and fear are used to control the masses...and on and on.

Fascism isn't necessarily totalitarian. It has its authoritarian forms, which you might learn if you actually read about it. The way some worship Bush** and his nationalistic wetdreams of Empire he might as well be Fuhrer.

"Not wanting gays around" you classifies you as non-progressive. You can't unlearn that by hanging out in a forum like this; you need to get out into the real world, grow as a person, and learn to accept others as they are without pre-judging them.

205. so you understand, we don't have anything against republican trolls
we just don't want them around.

There are other message boards that will welcome your sentiments just as surely as they will exclude ours, so don't take it personally when you get kicked. Move on to greener pastures and revel in the fact that "your side" is in total, absolute, fascistic control of the very central government that it claimed to revile for so long.

point was this. In a way, he said the GOP are getting off on the FU high. I'm telling ya, everyone in the GOP and the pathetic people who voted for them all think they're some kind of FU Mythical Gangster.

213. here's a working link to different article:
Legislation banning gay marriage signals politicking to come
~snip~

But last week's events suggest the subtext of the Republican primary will be anti-gay rhetoric to rally a mighty force of evangelical voters.

As the governor looked on, according to Dallas Morning News, an Ohio evangelist speaking at the event said, "Homosexuals are anything but happy and anything but fine." He called gay sex "a veritable breeding ground of disease" and said lesbians can “expect to live only to age 45 in the United States." To my knowledge, none of those statements are verifiable.

But to clinch the deal, Perry gave this response to a question about gay veterans returning to Texas from Iraq who might want to marry: "If there is some other state that has a more lenient view than Texas, then maybe that's a better place for them to live.”

Once upon a time, the battle cry of principle for the conservative movement was the stirring line in Barry Goldwater's acceptance speech at the 1964 Republican convention. It was one of my first and most potent political memories. He said, "I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice!"

Those days appear to be long gone.
