Two sex offenders struck again after receiving Viagra (Texas)
At least two of the 191 registered sex offenders who received sex-enhancing drugs at taxpayer expense committed new sex crimes after they were prescribed the medication, state officials confirmed today.

In all, they said, taxpayers spent $134,732 in six years to supply the sex offenders with Viagra and other erectile-dysfunction drugs — including $8,115 for six in Austin.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, at a late-morning news conference, said the new revelations underscore the importance of banning sex offenders from receiving the sex drugs. Other state officials moved swiftly to do that on Monday after Abbott confirmed that Texas sex offenders had been receiving the drugs.

Of the two felons arrested on new sex charges, he said, one was arrested on aggravated sexual assault charges for attacking a 53-year-old woman just two months after getting a prescription for the drug. He had been imprisoned in 1997 for aggravated sexual assault of a 11-year-old girl and was released on parole in 2001, officials said.

1. Let's look at it this way...
If they intend to sexually assault someone again, maybe they'll go blind before they get the chance!

OK, OK, I know, I'm naughty...

4. well...u might as well laugh...
otherwise the insanity of it would make one crazy...lets see..we give..and i do mean give..it is a medicaid program...viagra to sex offenders..sex offenders of children....and yet...that same child..probably does not have health care for the most basic of medical needs. Then there is the whole issue of..why do men need viagra...as it is seen as a medical need my medicaid...but women do not "need" birth control pills...that is not seen as a medical necessity..but viagra, of course...is a medical necessity...so insane...all u can do is laugh hysterically.

3. I thought you needed a perscription
And I thought you needed a perscription because it was meant for men of low impotence only. So many people were killed by that ephedra diet drug because it was meant for obese people, not for those who were merely overweight. Greedy greedy greedy...

5. viagra is also supposed to cause
heart attacks so maybe their itty bitty hearts and flacid dicks will just kill them.

6. Sex crimes can be committed by impotent men
In fact, if I recall the literature, there were plenty of cases of sexually motivated murder without penetration. It was said a knife was a substitute for the penis, etc. - all the usual Freudian analysis.

So, the idea that denying Viagra to this group of men would reduce recidivism is not necessarily true, even if it may seem obvious. The idea of giving Viagra to paroled sex criminals does seem peculiar, though.

7. True, but you don't pay for the gas and matches for an arsonist
Edited on Fri May-27-05 04:37 PM by Love Bug
The arsonist may commit arson again, but if the State pays for and hands him matches and gasoline they are culpable.

9. Agreed, a full explanation is called for.
There may be some kind of theory behind this; if so people deserve to know what it is.

10. This is why I'm for the Death Penalty for pedophiles and sexual predators.
Less than 4 years for aggravated sexual assault on an 11 year old? Ridiculous. They should have just killed the scumbag as there is no rehabilitation or cure for this form of insanity. I realize it isn't popular around here to say so but these "people" should be put down like the dogs they are.

18. More would end up going free, then...
Sexual offenses are notoriously hard to convict for (the woman/child is lying, asking for it, wearing scanty clothing, flirting, didn't say "no" clearly enough, no witnesses other than the victim, etc.). Juries are reluctant to take away someone's freedom based on victim testimony alone - and that is often all there is. Add not only taking away freedom but life, and getting a conviction will be even harder.

15. But they are eliminating it for everyone - not just sex offenders.
Yes, Medicaid should pay for birth control too, but this is a quality of life issue.

What other quality of life drugs would you like to eliminate? Pain Meds?

19. Taxpayers should not be paying for someone's
hard on, while people in dire need with life threatening diseases go without healthcare,
because people not in need are taking advantage of the system.

You want Viagra? That's fine. Pay for it yourself.

20. Gee, that's about the same reason the other side gives
for not providing birth control to those on medicaid.

I suppose you agree with that too.

14. How would an MD know if a patient was a sex offender?..
in NYS there was just a big to do over this because Medicaid was paying for the scripts. I would imagine there was no crossover between records systems.

I discovered that there are a ton of level 3 sex offenders whose addresses are at a city men's shelter which is a 15 minute walk from me. They probably get their scripts at Bellevue hospital, which is just next door.
