Ex-military officer denies role in Chile’s ’73 executions during Miami trial

From the witness stand in federal court in Miami, former Chilean military officer Armando Fernández Larios on Friday spoke publicly for the first time about his homeland's infamous "Caravan of Death" 30 years ago.

He offered a litany of denials.

Fernández, 54, was at turns animated and argumentative as he responded to questions by Bob Kerrigan, an attorney for the family of Winston Cabello. The 28-year-old economist was executed and buried with a dozen others in a common grave outside the small northern city of Copiapó.

Cabello's family tracked down Fernández, who has been fixing cars and living quietly in Miami since the 1980s, and sued him in U.S. District Court in Miami. They seek unspecified damages for allegations including crimes against humanity, cruel and inhuman treatment, and torture. (snip/...)

(Another celebrant of a U.S. Republican supported right-wing dictatorship found lurking in South Florida, home of celebrants of a dispossed U. S. supported bloody right-wing dictator, Fulgencio Batista.)
