Mo. Legislature to Hold Special Session on Abortion
Mo. to Hold Special Session on Abortion

Saturday May 14, 2005 3:46 AM

By DAVID A. LIEB

Associated Press Writer

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - After the Missouri Legislature adjourned Friday without passing bills aimed at discouraging abortions, Republican Gov. Matt Blunt said he would call a special session in September on anti-abortion legislation.

The state's largest anti-abortion group, Missouri Right to Life, and the governor blamed each other for the failure of the bills this session - despite an overwhelming anti-abortion majority in the Legislature.

``I am profoundly disappointed in the leaders of Missouri Right to Life for their efforts to defeat two good pro-life bills that would have become the law and protected the lives of unborn children but for the group's tragic and bizarre tactic of working against pro-life legislation,'' Blunt said in a statement announcing the special session.

Anti-abortion lawmakers claim 128 of the 162 House seats and 28 of the 34 Senate seats.
"We have the largest pro-life bipartisan majority ever elected, and they could not get pro-life legislation through, and this to me is attributable to Governor Blunt,'' Missouri Right to Life President Pam Fichter declared.

5. Yup...that's my state.
Gotta love it.

Blunt is a dick. One-termer, to be sure. He might not even make it out of the primaries.

6. Fine men $1,000 for each time they fail to use condoms
and impregnate women. You'd see these laws against womens reproductive rights disappear.

16. They're called vasectomies. It is what all the smart ones do.
I wouldn't even consider dating anyone who hasn't had one.

7. Well DUH - why actually do what you say you're going to do
Take abortion away, and a lot of these anti-choice folks are going to wonder why the hell the best place they can get a job is fucking WalMart. The 'Pukes will never put their money where their mouths are and ban abortion (well maybe in a few states, and that's bad enough) but if they do not have the "dead baby" issue, they're going to get beat.

9. Unless he was referring to non-fetal stem cells.
Edited on Sat May-14-05 02:30 AM by Joe Kerr
"Blunt said he intervened because the bills had stalled - and he expressed concerns about a provision that he feared could negatively affect stem cell research."

Looks like the governor isn't 100% pro-life.

13. Coat hanger republicans are among the more odious types of republicans,
but it is good to see them attacking each other. It would be nice if democrats in Missouri could find a way to encourage this infighting. The insatiable appetite for hatred among many republicans is so great that it easily can become self destructive.

14. Sounds like a rather incompetent majority in the Legislature.
Why should they get extra time to show their incompetence?

17. Will this be constitutional?
They will pass legislation I have no doubt but will it be constitutional and do they care? Does Roe vs Wade just leave it up to the states or does it grant federal rights?
