Senate President's lobbyist disclosure measure fails
The Associated Press
TALLAHASSEE, Fla.
A bill that would have forced lobbyists to disclose their earnings and the money they spend wining and dining lawmakers died Friday when the House and Senate failed to reach a compromise.
The bill was a top priority for Senate President Tom Lee, who declined to have his chamber vote on the measure after it was gutted on the House floor. Instead, he sent it back to the House, where it sat untouched as the session adjourned just before midnight.
Earlier Friday, the House loaded the bill down with a host of amendments that took the bite out of Lee's bid to rein in the highly paid influence peddlers who roam the Capitol hallways and often author bills that make it to the floor.
Some Democrats tried unsuccessfully to keep the teeth in the original measure.
