San Diego council endorses special election for new mayor

Monday, May 2, 2005

(05-02) 15:33 PDT SAN DIEGO, (AP) --

The San Diego City Council unanimously voted Monday to hold a special election this summer to choose a replacement for Mayor Dick Murphy, who resigned a week ago amid the city's persistent financial troubles.

The council voted 8-0, with one member absent, to set July 26 as the election date. If no candidate wins a clear majority, a runoff vote would be held at a time to be determined.

The council could have chosen to appoint a replacement for Murphy, whose resignation takes effect on July 15.

The eight votes included both Murphy and Donna Frye, the councilwoman who narrowly lost a write-in bid to unseat the mayor last fall.

1. This seems to bode ever so well for Donna Frye
She damn near won the last time ... on a write in capaign. She should clean up in an open election with her name on the ballot.

3. Keep in mind that she needs to win a majority of votes...

to avoid there being a second "runoff" election. I think it would be wise for all Dems to unite behind her now and try to get that majority sooner rather than wait for a runoff election later. The Republican vote will be split now, but with that many people running, it will be hard for her to win a majority unless we organize and get a big turnout for her the first time. The two different polls I see have her getting around 35% to 40% of the vote now. We need to through getting more voters out or by convincing others to get that extra 10-15% of votes now!

Haul out the bumper stickers! I've just replaced my Kerry sticker with a Donna Frye sticker earlier today.

10. My brother, who lives in Tierra Santa, has been champing at the bit
for something like this to happen. In speaking with him, he tells me many of his neighbors wanted Frye, back when the first election took place.

He, as do I, tends to paint all republicans with the same brush .... the one loaded with the color 'fuckwad'.

6. I know, but it just amazes me
How little people seem to care that more people voted for her then Murphy.

I'm still hoping the state supreme court rules that writing someone's name indicates voter intent, even if the damn oval isn't filled in. Then this whole thing will be moot.

4. Wooo-hooooo!! Donna will take it!!
This time everyone will remember to color in the bubble. And had Frye been appointed, she would have had the taint of "not having been legitimately elected" that the right could hold over her forever.

Now she can win it fair and square.

Go Donna!!!

8. San Diegan checking in - I think this is a good decision

What the SF news source fails to mention is that another alternative would have been to allow the Deputy Mayor take over and finish out Murphy's term. But Councilman Michael Zucchet is facing a possible federal corruption charge stemming from the "strippergate" scandal. As it stands now, he will be acting Mayor between Murphy's departure and the election.

An election avoids the possibility of having our mayor become a defendant in court, and the obvious pitfalls of having a mayor appointed by a sharply divided city council.

The expense of piggybacking a citywide special election onto a likely state special election is miniscule.
