Group to Launch Ad Campaign to Help GOP
snip>
Progress for America scheduled news conference for Monday to unveil its plans, and officials declined to discuss them in advance. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the material to be made public.

The ad praises two of Bush's seven stalled nominees, Janice Rogers Brown and Priscilla Owen. It says it's the job of a senator to vote, adding, "Urge your senators to vote, up or down."

Jim Manley, a spokesman for Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, criticized the ad. "Apparently no one at Progress For America has studied the Constitution or a U.S. history book, because their advertising campaign is intended to undermine a carefully chosen system of check and balances that has served this country well for more than 200 years," he said.
....
Including its web site advocacy and other measures, Progress for America claims it will spend $3 million over the next two weeks.
The organization has previously advertised in favor of Bush's proposal for voluntary personal accounts under Social Security....

1. Progress for America? That's an irony in names if I've ever heard one!
And no, I certainly bet they haven't read their history books. Hell, they are too busy tryng to rewrite the Constitution to have actually read it.

2. Any church money going into this PAC? Can we revoke anyone's tax-exempt
status?

With "Justice Sunday" the churches were treading a very fine line. If they put money into PACs that try to influence the selection of judges, that should be exposed and prosecuted.

3. Part of rove's little plan to obtain victory?
Making a cheap appeal like this would be expected. Will they get that gravel voiced announcer to say "we need an up/down vote" - the catch phrase sound byte used by all of them now.

7. Progressive groups need to spent $10 for every $1 these operatives spend
Edited on Mon May-02-05 12:29 AM by Democat
Don't let the secretly funded Bush operatives outspend us ever again. Our wimpy leadership let them win in 2004, we can never let that happen again.

It's time to take the gloves off and go after the judges by name in TV and radio commercials. Look how well it worked against Kerry.

9. Group launches anti-filibuster ad campaign...DEMS abuse the rules..

Backers of conservative judges take political fight to airwaves

WASHINGTON - Determined to pressure wavering Republicans, an independent group is launching a costly ad campaign designed to make sure President Bush’s conservative judicial nominees receive swift confirmation.

The organization planned to unveil its effort Monday. The Associated Press obtained the details independently in advance.

“Senate Democrats have abused the rules and refused to even allow a vote,” says the television ad. “So courtrooms sit empty, while thousands of Americans have their cases delayed.”

The ad says it’s the job of a senator to vote, adding: “Urge your senators to vote, up or down.”

10. The irony is that without the filibuster there would be a fairness
doctrine (the reinstatement of which was killed under threat of filibuster in 93).

If there were a fainess doctrine, then there'd be time allowed for a rebuttal of these far right groups' lies.

Push For Bush Judges Hits Airwaves

WASHINGTON, May 2, 2005

"Senate Democrats have abused the rules and refused to even allow a vote," says the television ad. "So courtrooms sit empty, while thousands of Americans have their cases delayed."

(AP) Determined to pressure wavering Republicans, an independent group is launching a costly ad campaign designed to make sure President Bush's conservative judicial nominees receive swift confirmation.

Over the next two weeks, Progress For America intends to spend $350,000 on "radio ads on Christian stations" and $1.5 million on television ads in six targeted states as well as nationally, according to a memo describing the plans.

The organization planned to unveil its effort Monday. The Associated Press obtained the details independently in advance.

"Senate Democrats have abused the rules and refused to even allow a vote," says the television ad. "So courtrooms sit empty, while thousands of Americans have their cases delayed."

15. I just sent this email to this group, too (sent it to the FRC earlier)
Good morning,

Below is a letter I recently sent to the Family Research Council, headed by FRC President Tony Perkins. I sent this in a reply to an email I received from the FRC re: the recent "Justice Sunday", more accurately known as "Just Us Sunday" or "Injustice Sunday". It seems the FRC believes the filibuster should be eliminated so that radical judges with very pro-business, anti-environment, and anti-civil rights stances can be appointed to lifetime Federal courts. It seems, however, that the FRC, and many GOP Senators, have forgotten they once supported the filibuster. Here's my reply to them; I thought you might be interested in reading it.. Sure would be nice to see exposure of their hypocrisy in the mainstream media!

To whom it may concern,

I am curious as to why preventing filibusters are so important right now. I mean, a mere 7 years ago your organization was in support of them:

http://talkleft.com/new_archives/010459.html

In 1998, then-Senior FRC Writer and Analyst Steven Schwalm, appeared on NPR's Talk of the Nation and had this to say about the filibuster against James Hormel, President's Clinton's ambassadorial nominee:

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
...the Senate is a -- is not a majoritarian institution like the House of Representatives is. It is a deliberative body and it's got a number of checks and balances built into our government. This is one of those checks, in which a majority cannot just sheerly force its will, even if they have a majority of votes in some cases, that's why there are things like filibusters and other things that give minorities in the Senate some power to slow things up, to hold things up, and let things be aired properly.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also,

Analysis: Frist flip-flopped on filibusters (MSNBC)
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7518425
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In 1999 and 2000, before he became majority leader, Frist was one of the Republican senators blocking President Clinton's nominee to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, Richard Paez.

Frist and others repeatedly prevented a vote on the Paez nomination. In 1999, Frist and 52 other Republicans voted against a motion to proceed to a vote on Paez.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And this:

http://www.swingstateproject.com/2005/04/sen_isakson_rga.php#comments
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Senator Isakson on the floor of the United States Senate extolling the virtues of the filibuster to protect the rights of the minority from being overrun by the majority.

"Don't you fear that the Shi'ites inevitably being in the majority, that you will be overrun? And he says, 'oh no, we have a secret weapon.' Mr. President, this is a Kurdish leader, in the middle of Iraq in the 21st century who said he had a secret weapon. And when asked what it was, he said one word, 'filibuster'" <...>

"It is one of their minority leaders, proudly stating one of the pillars and principles of our government, as the way they would ensure that the majority never overran the minority."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Would you like to see the video of Sen. Isakson?

http://reid.senate.gov/video/isakson.mov

So, now all of a sudden filibusters are a *bad* thing because they go against *your* political agenda?

Jesus had no use for hypocrites.

You and your organization defile the name of Christ.

Disgustedly yours,

It's very well stated and convincing. Our people should start using it, exactly as is, word for word. Let them accuse us of plagiarism, I hope they do!

16. How many of these people urged their Senators to vote 'up-or-down'
back when Republicans were blocking Clinton's nominees? Actually most of them didn't even get out of committee.

17. Democratic Group Set to Counter GOP Ad Campaign Over Bush Judicial Nominee
Democratic Group Set to Counter GOP Ad Campaign Over Bush Judicial Nominees

Date: Monday, May 02, 2005
By: David Espo, Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- A costly advertising war erupted Monday over President Bush's controversial court nominees, with opposing groups vowing to spend at least $1 million each over the next two weeks.

Responding swiftly to advertising from a group that supports Bush's nominees, People for The American Way said it would launch counter commercials.

"We do not intend to let their ads go unanswered," said Ralph Neas. "We're working with the masters of deception and distraction that brought us the Swift Boat smears," he added in a reference to last year's campaign attacks on Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry.

Neas spoke less than an hour after Progress for America, which has strong Republican ties, unveiled a commercial designed to pressure wavering Republicans and help assure quick approval for Bush's judicial nominees. <snip>
