By BOB LOWRY, Associated Press Writer

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Rev. Jerry Falwell was hospitalized in critical condition Tuesday, battling his second case of viral pneumonia in just five weeks, hospital and church officials said.

Falwell, 71, was admitted to Lynchburg General Hospital shortly before midnight Monday suffering from "respiratory arrest," the hospital said in a statement.

He was put on a ventilator and stabilized but remained in critical condition, the hospital said.

"He's resting comfortably and in stable condition," said Ron Godwin, Falwell's executive assistant. "It's a recurrence of the viral pneumonia."

66. Pneumonia can be dangerous in a 71 year old.
The call it the old people's friend, because it takes away a lot of bedridden people who are suffering. It is hard to say with Fallwell, how it would go.

Indeed! He has milked the poor pitiful people that beleived in his BS for many years. I watched and marvelled at the interviewers who had him on their shows and who never once questioned what the Bastard was doing, taking the poor people's money and living it up. did you notice how, in the last few times you saw him how gross he was getting, his jowls so full that you could tell he was living the good life with the very best of foods while the little dummies who wanted so much to have something to cling to were contributing to that phoney. If there is a heaven and hell as he espoused then I can imagine which one he would end up in.

I don't remember his name (we had a family friend there not too long ago) but he was a completely selfmade man, immigrant who started and owned a tool and dye shop. He and his wife never had any children so they gave huge amounts to the hospital. The wing that Falwell is probably in is named after him.

Don't feel bad about wanting the two of them to be together forever.

Actually, I don't dislike Falwell as much as most of the rest of that crowd. From time to time, he'd even admit he fucked up. Of course, he lied a lot, like claiming that he never had much to do with The Clinton Chronicles, when he financed it and flogged it on his POS show non-stop.

But occasionally, he could admit he was wrong and apologize.

Unlike, say, Pat Robertson.

150. he once admitted he...ahem...masturbated
in the 80's, Ron Reagan Jr had a talk show that ran weekly on one of the nets....i recall he had 3 guest, one of them Jerry. I believe another was James Caan(?) (it was long time ago!) anyway, the talk was of xxx, and Ron asked Jerry after Jerry made some preposterous moralistic statement "Jerry, do YOU ever masturbate?" Jerry hemmed and hawed, tried to redirect the conversation (darn, i'd love to see that show again!) but the 2 other guests and Ron, after admitting they masturbated (lol) kept after Jerry...to be truthful, i felt sorry for him! finally he admitted he did....
A more honest, generous spirited society then ours would have steered Jerry away from the fat'n'happy'n'hypocritical life he became comfortable with (if anyone has seen the Tammy Bakker documentary 'the eyes of tammy faye' they'll get some inkling of the heartlessness of falwel and his collaborators) especially their being religious! (supposedly, a truly religious society would guide the falwels away from even wanting to get rich/powwerful, much less using larceny and deceit and outright crimes to do so!)

Edited on Tue Mar-29-05 03:20 PM by onager
On the broadcast of the Christian television program "The 700 Club," Falwell made the following statement (about the 9/11 attacks):

"I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.'"

Okay, "a higher road..."

Things like this make me wish I believed in Hell.

I hope that will do. It's about all I can muster for this hateful, hypocritical tub of guts.

36. No wishing death to somebody is giving them weapons
in cases such as this one you take a higher road and STAY OUT of this family tragedy

Now on to other issues, you are right. When it comes to medical issues, just leave them alone and let the kid do what he will do, even if his son decides to pull the plug... which in cases like this may be necessary, depending on how well they manage to keep the PO2 balance.

Trust me, this is a private issue and should remain private....

So IN THIS CASE take the higher road and don't wish ill to this man.

Truth be told, he has an express elevator waitinf for him, and it is not going up, but rather down... but wishing his earthly demise will just give weapons to the Theo Cons.

52. No I said, reread carefully
in medical PERSONAL ISSUES we have to take the high ground when it involves an individual

Now go get to it with things such as the Michigan Bill or the US Congress getting involved in the Shiavo case

You think we need to get involved in Falwell's MEDICAL CONDITION? DO you think we look good by wishing him death? You are just confirming the frame about culture of death.

So this is why you SHOULD NOT get invovled in Falwell's PERSONAL MEDICAL ISSUES...

Now I did not say take the high road in anthing else.. just in wishing this man death, live or what have you.

In this very narrow issue (Falwell's Medical Matters) this is a PERSONAL Matter and we should not butt our noses in there...

As the old Jewish proverb goes: "If you're going to spit in my face, don't try to tell me it's raining."

I can't believe the sudden sympathy for this odious man. Oh, "and his family?" You mean the same family who profits from the robbery of gullible widows and old folks? The same family who will no doubt continue Falwell's "work?" Do you really think this bunch is going to See The Light and suddenly become Unitarians?

I've said it before, but...

...these Good Liberal Xians will still be trying to hold hands with the right-wing Fundies and sing "Kumbayah," when they're being driven to the very gates of The Falwell Memorial Camp For The Theologically Incorrect.

68. You are confusing simpathy
with not wishing the man death.

Another proverb, "don't wish upon others what you don't wish upon yourself."

You may also try to see this strategically... we wish him death, collectively, we are confirming the clap trap about culture of death, and playing right into their hands.

Now have I said, go pray? Hell no... have I said, wish him well? HELL NO

All I have said is... don't play into their hands and wish the man any ill... and it is NONE of our bidness...

This is a very narrow issue... now go get them where it matters and don't pass them the ammo

Yet he didn't stay out of that family tragedy, did he? In fact, if I'm right, and there were such people in the towers that day.... he went and blamed some of the victims.

May he suffer horribly and completely recover.

I mean, suffer horribly as in, begging God to take him for several weeks. Then let him get better.

So we can point our fingers at his fat gut and say, "YOU let this happen."

122. I remember Jerry Falwell.
Edited on Tue Mar-29-05 06:24 PM by NYC
I missed the quote about blowing away people in the name of Our Savior, but I clearly remember this comment regarding 9/11 and NYC:

"I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.'"

...Falwell suggested that the aforementioned groups "have attempted to secularize America, have removed our nation from its relationship with Christ on which it was founded ... (and) that created an environment which possibly has caused God to lift the veil of protection which has allowed no one to attack America on our soil since 1812."*

*Re 1812, the British burned down the White House in 1814 or 1815. As everyone other than Jerry Falwell knows, the White House is "on our soil". A new one was built.

but I want him to experience pain so bad he needs some compassionate person to give him aide and comfort (preferably a working mom struggling to make ends meet) and I want him to be scared as hell so he learns how it feels like and I want him to have an out of body experience where he meets his God and his God tells him to shut the hell up. I don't want the fat fu** to recover to the way he has been living, I want him to learn to understand what true compassion really is and to see working moms and dedicated people who don't judge others, but help them, no matter who or how pigheaded or how much damage they have done to this world.

I mean, after all, he says that gay people can change our orientation just by trying to hard enough anf forcing ourselves to do it with the opposite sex long enough. Maybe he can get what a lot of gay people have gotten. It'd be great if it happened and made the headlines to boot. Oh, that'd be sweet.

23. Matthew 5:43
You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’
But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that?
And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?
Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

I hope he gets better.

...In my last post I speculated that Moon may have dangled unsavoury details of the White House call boy scandal over the head of George HW Bush in order to gain influence. It's certainly true that, just a few years before, Moon was either an embarrassment or a pariah to Republicans and evangelicals alike. (That was when they were merely alike, and not, effectively, one and the same.) In 1978, Jerry Falwell told Esquire that "Reverend Sun Myung Moon is like the plague: he exploits boys and girls, and he should be exported ." Then, in 1994, one of Moon's many front organizations gifted Falwell's Liberty Baptist University $3.5 million, and otherwise forgave tens of millions of dollars in debt. Falwell's college was saved, by Moon, and surprise: Falwell changed his tune....

And especially to mmonk on the original thread for this topic because this is what it's all about:

Jesus said to love my enemies, it is in that vain that I wish Rev. Falwell a speedy recovery even though I'm pretty sure he would not do the same for me.

Doing for others what we know to be the right thing regardless of how they would treat us. It doesn't take a Christian to do the right thing just the strength of character not only to not allow one's self to be drug down to the level of their enemy, but to also wish him well.

You need to get a grip on reality and realize that we are in a war for political and economic survival.

Edited on Tue Mar-29-05 08:22 PM by hippywife
not to be disgustingly mean to those who are ill or hurting regardless of who they are, doesn't mean that we are being weak. Many of us are activists in our own right. We choose different tools to address the problems.

You don't need to wish harm and hardship to another human being or group of human beings to be in this battle. It doesn't mean you wish them success, either, and aren't working to see that they don't succeed. It's merely addressing the fact that we are all human and addressing the fact that we each face the spectre of illness.

It does no one any good, particularly one's self, to kick someone when they are down. It only proves that you are no better than that which you profess to despise.

60. Let me help you up on that pedestal
Edited on Tue Mar-29-05 03:56 PM by sybylla
Jerry Fallwell deserves no better in his life than he gave to others. I see no one here wishing upon him anything worse than he has wished upon and even had a hand in delivering to others. He was a man who acquired a position in this society in which he could do so much for the world and he squandered it for money, fame and power, caring not who he stepped on as he drew the religiously insane under his wings and defrauded them of their money.

I will gladly help you onto the gleaming white pedestal that lifts you above this fray if that is where you want to be. That is your right. But don't expect that you will have any effect on the fray itself. When you live your life hating and encourage others to hate, this is exactly what you get in return.

shouldn't be ostracized for their behavior? There's a difference between hate breeding hate and taking satisfaction in the fact that a hate-factory like Jerry Falwell is being shut down.

Apparently that line is too fine a distinction for some.

His hate speech towards homosexuals has certainly contributed to dividing our great nation. There's money in homophobia, I tell ya!

While I feel empathy and compassion for all living creatures, I just can't find myself kicking him while he's down.

Thoughts are with his family, until they piss me off too!

87. Viral Pneumonia
Found some information about Reverend Falwell's affliction.

Viral pneumonia can be caused by one of several viruses, including
influenza, parainfluenza, adenovirus, rhinovirus, herpes simplex
virus, respitory syncytial virus, hantavirus, and cytomegalovirus.

Most cases of viral pneumonia are mild and get better without treatment, but some cases are more serious and require hospitalization. People at risk for more serious viral pneumonia
typically have impaired immune systems and include HIV patients,
transplant patients, young children(especially those with heart
defects), the elderly, and people taking medications such as steroids
to supress their immune systems to treat autoimmune disorders.

All this kind of gives you something to think about, like which category does old Jerry fit in. We can eliminate the young children
with heart defects, but that still leaves the other risk categories.

Just some food for thought.

And let's not forget this is the second time he's had to enter the hospital with viral pneumonia!!!!

103. Welll, I'm not gloating
I've "fought" Jerry Falwell for years, but the fate I wished on him was simply one of being politically discredited and forgotten.

In a spiritual context, death is never an easy passage. As much as I wished him ill in his politicking, I wish him well in his illness and possible immanent death.

And if/when he recovers, I'll resume kicking his ass on political issues.

Nothing is gained by gloating over the man's problems.

143. Whole Lot of 'Splainin' To Do At Heaven's Gates
I have seethed as much as most of us has at Preacher Falwell's various pronouncements, posturings, and political antics. I'm still angry about many of them and I'm still disgusted that a supposed Man of God can behave in such an UN-Christian fashion.

If my own nose were a little cleaner, I think I'd delight in the thought of Falwell getting his from his angry, judgmental God. But as someone who falls far short of the mark myself, I hope for divine mercy when I keel over.

Nevertheless, to paraphrase Desi Arnaz's character, I see a certain sinner's soul late of Fall's Church, Virginia having a whole lot of 'splainin' to do about his actions here on Earth. I also forsee a whole lot of rationalizations falling far, far short.

He's a human being. Mistaken, misguided, generally wrong, etc. but still a human being. I don't wish suffering on him.

And since my wishes will have no effect on his fate, it matters not whether I wish him good or ill. My guess is that he'll recover to pontificate erroneously again. If not, it's time, Bro. Jerry, to answer to your Maker for your crimes against His/Her creatures. I do hope, however, that if NOW is "your time to go," that you recognize and acknowledge, before you go how wrong you have been so many times, and how many people you have needlessly hurt, and seek forgiveness and redemption.

In other words, I hope God is more merciful than you have been. Not that you deserve it.

181. AGREE ! - let those of us who are without sin cast the first stone
He's done a great deal of damage in our country. But I still don't want to see him crucified and fed to the lions.
In fact in College, a large group of us used to get food and beer and smokables every Sunday night to jeer at his ridiculous show (must have been at least 10 or more regulars at the apartment every Sunday).
We got a big laugh out of him--almost like watching comedy central.
So at least he gave us that.
Anyway, if it's not his time he won't die--if it is, nothing can stop it.
He's just like us, doing the best he can with what he's got( he just got short changed in the open mind department)-
Too bad when ANYONE gets sick.

The illusion that we are separate is reponsible for nearly as much destruction as the religious right.

(bet that pisses off alot of people!)

The hand that holds a cool towel on his forehead to ease his pain be the hands of a gay man.

The nurse that comes in and quietly reasures him and gives him the much needed pain medicine, be a lesbian.

The man that adjusts his bed and re-orients him in the bed so he is comfortable, and fluffs his pillow, a new immigrant to this country, a Muslim.

The person who brings in the soup for him to drink if he can, and sets the straw in his mouth so he can sip, a young woman working her way though college, the target of vile hate and venom, because she had an abortion.

Yes, I hope he has a peacefull and quiet passing if it is the time.

Just like he wishes for others.

But then, I won't wish for that, even tho it is taking a great deal of restraint.

I will, however, choose to REJOICE when this evil creature is NO LONGER A PART OF THIS WORLD. The world will indeed be a better place when this evil is gone from us.

I wish for him EXACTLY what he has caused happen to others he hates.

No more, no less.

I pray that soon, many other evil creatures like him are also removed from this world, so that we may live in the peace we are denied as long as these vile creatures live and breath amongst us.

The pathetic, little man that is Jerry Falwell deserves to wallow in a state of misery and sickness for a while. Karma. Pennance. Come-uppance. Whatever you want to call it, I think there aren't very many of us feeling too sorry for him.

If this illness claims his sorry ass, it won't be too soon. If it doesn't, stay tuned for a whole lotta Christian right-wing voodoo propoganda claiming he was saved by Jay-sus to continue spewing his ridiculous Lynchburg brand of intolerance disguised as religion.

178. This is long, but make me feel better anyhow.
Okay, if you are against hate, you might not want to read this. (long)
Message:
I know many of you have a distinct problem with hate, but I feel the need to express my true feelings about this news. If you feel only mildly supportive of the gay rights issues, like I am sure a select few of you on DU may feel, then you may not want to waste your time reading this. Others may be disgusted with my honest feelings, but you may want to read out of curiosity. Other will know exactly where I am coming from and even feel the same way. With all the alienation people may feel one way or another on this board when it comes to religion, I'll let you know now, this is not an attack against anyone on DU but it is for Falwell and the people who secretly condone raping lesbians and doing the type of violent murderous activities that caused a young man named Matther Shepherd to live 5 days in the desert with head wounds in the freezing cold before living a little longer after he was found and then dying all because some jerk said, keyword said, he made a pass at him.

I'm not conflicted, but I have 2 different feelings about this right now. I know many of you would be horrified at this, but I have to express my true feelings because Falwell sure never holds back his antigay sentiments. I don't represent all gay people or even a majority I am sure, but here goes:

I'm a lesbian who lives in a red state and has been attacked and humiliated to the point that I have self esteem issues so bad that I can no longer carry on a normal conversation with people and have problems looking people in the eye for feeling like I must have been put on this earth with no hope that there is a such thing as a soul mate for me and even with years of therapy and effort, this hasn't changed my situation or helped my ability to have any hope. You can go ahead and believe I have serious mental issues because it's true. You can also assume I have trouble fitting in or feeling empathy for the human species except for some of you on DU who seem to have been in contact directly with fundamentalist Christians for a long period of time. I have been surrounded by the right wing fundies for so long that I no longer believe there could possibly be a God and even if there is, He must truly hate me.

That being said, I can get the the point. Part of me wants to say a loud and triumphant "Halleleujah" because I may have finally reached the point that I can say I outlived this vile disgusting soul raping homophobic woman hating self made son of a bitch of a man. I am glad Larry Flynt said what he said about his cousic long ago in his magazine. Ding Dong Falwell might soon be gone.

The other part of me feels a little differently. If he finally leaves this world, who will I point to when trying to describe, believe it or not, the milder side of homophobia. He may be one of the top homophobes in the country, but we've never heard of him actually killing or assaulting a gay person. Well, that's where I begin to think about what hate speech actually does. Remember Charles Manson? Never actually did the killings, but he's rotting in prison for a reason folks. He had that ability to hypnotize people and control their minds to the point that they would kill for him. That's crucial. Jerry Falwell is the fundie version of Manson. He inspires hatred and he fosters it. He blames 99% of everything in the world that goes wrong on maybe (depending on which set of statistics you believe) 1 to 10% of the population including September 11th. He says just enough that it keeps the majority religion in the country as right wing and hatefulled as possible for the most part. Of course, there are liberal Christians too, truce already. I'm not talking about you right now, I'm talking about those who firmly believe in the Ex Gay idea and what's it called? Exodus, is that it? Those groups who systematically brain wash and mind fuck people into raping themselves essentially. I mean how many of you who are straight think that if you try hard enough, you can make yourselves do the deed with the same sex and never look at the opposite sex again? I didn't think so.

So while I may be hate filled to feel this way about this man, these are my honest feelings. Whatever happens, whether he live or die at this point, I hope he suffers. If I had my sayso in this, he'd suffer not just physically, he'd suffer emotionally to the point of contemplating suicide. I have reached the point where he has had his effect on my mind too. While his followers may condone mind fucking gay people into letting their own brainwashed minds rape themselves, he has instilled in me the type of hate, I, like many of you, would be horrified to feel. And I no longer care. I sure don't have it in me to forgive or wish him the best at this point. I'm not a Christian. I never will be. I never could be. I no longer have what it takes to forgive or forget. I say "good riddance" if Falwell does kick the bucket. All I got left to say to him is "when I get to Hell, pretend you don't know me, you miserable loathsome rotten son of a bitch."

191. you speak as a victim of abuse
I relate to your comments for a different reason, but I have seen abuse first hand. Victimization creates self-hate in the victim which must be overcome, but it takes time and a supportive environment. Your anger is positive in that it moves beyond denial. People who've never been in a situation of severe abuse (esp when it strikes at the very roots of identity) have a hard time understanding what it feels like--having thoughts such as yours may be entirely justified. Congratulations on getting to the angry stage. A healthy anger spurs action such as writing--who knows who might feel the same and appreciate your words? Also it may contain insights for those who don't grasp how victimization can crush all capacity for compassion in what may have been a very generous and trusting individual prior to the abuse.

The big picture is that we --all Americans-- are victimized when we allow others to be targeted in the way that such groups and minorities have been--by Falwell and his followers. It is not Christian and it is not acceptable. It is brutal exploitation and it is not healthy for our society to allow it to continue. Followers of Falwell need to be praying for their own souls right about now and Falwell needs to be praying the hardest IMO. The rest of us need to be doing whatever we can to counterract this kind of hatemongering, because it will not die with Falwell. Actively supporting legislation for prosecution of hate crimes is a good start. But we need to work against the forces that incite the hate crimes. This is everyone's issue, no matter if you fall into a targeted group or not.

And if that weren't enough, we are now being abused by our own government in other areas to a degree once thought impossible. Many Americans have not come to terms with this yet (denial stage). But to work against any abuse, you have to name it, face it, own it, and consciously decide to reject it. Gotta get angry and define solutions. Might have to redirect some negativity back from whence it came for awhile, using every means short of violence to bring attention to the abuse, to gain support. Do not be afraid of drawing a line in the sand.
