Wolfowitz Meets With World Bank Executives to Drum Up Support

WASHINGTON (AP) - Paul Wolfowitz is meeting with World Bank executives representing developing countries as he tries to cement support for his nomination by President Bush to take over the helm of the development bank.

A group of executive directors, including representatives of Brazil and India, met with Wolfowitz this week and spoke of the importance of reducing poverty and improving health and education, the bank said Wednesday.

The selection of Wolfowitz, an architect of the Iraq war, to head the 184-nation World Bank has drawn criticism, especially from some international aid and other groups. They question his development credentials and worry that he would try to use the development bank to help the United States' friends and punish its enemies.

Germany, Britain and Italy have publicly backed Wolfowitz, giving him important support from Europe, where hostility to the U.S.-led war in Iraq lingers.

3. Actually read an article today that said
maybe getting this job would be good for Wolfie. Might wake him up out of his stupor, to find out what kind of poverty really goes on in 3rd world countries. Maybe he would be a better man. Don't hold yer breath.
