Local Republicans back Greer (Judge in Schiavo Case a Republican)
Local Republicans back Greer

Accused of "murder" in the Schiavo case by U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay, the judge is defended at home.

By MICHAEL SANDLER, Times Staff Writer
Published March 22, 2005

CLEARWATER - Many local Republicans shuddered last weekend when U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay accused a Pinellas judge of "murder" and "terrorism."

Such labels, troubling in any context, are particularly grating when they involve two members of the same political party.

"I was absolutely so disgusted with what he said," said County Commissioner Bob Stewart.

Pinellas County Property Appraiser Jim Smith, a former state legislator and Republican state committeeman, called DeLay's remarks "a disgrace."

Local Republicans had their own words for Judge George Greer, who, as presiding judge in the Terri Schiavo case, ordered the removal of her feeding tube on March 18.

Conscientious. Honest. Compassionate. A good Christian. An outstanding lawyer.

1. I get the feeling this will shatter the republican party
I think more traditional conservatives are waking up en masse to how radical and insane the leadership in Washington is. I think this, more than anything, will splinter the party in the coming months.

6. The freepers are talking about getting arms at WalMart!
I thought that Free Repukelick was like a counter part to us, but those people are CRAZY! They are grossly uninformed, stupid, angry and scared! I didn't see one post over there that indicated that they knew anything about PVSs. They think she could get better! One of them is implying that she will rise on Easter!
Maybe there will be a rift on this between the thinking and deludinoid pugs....

I'd love to hear their nuttiness, but I can't deal with their crappy site.

25. This single incident won't - but
move after move - shreds more of the edges off of their tapestry - and each time more folks move into the fray - and/or tear themselves fully away. More folks are definitely waking up and moving towards the edge or out.

8. Excellent question.
I am sure he defended the right of Florida to have its own laws and own judges in our federal system. Or he planted his lips on Delay's buttcheeks. One of those.

15. Crazy Florida
I am a New Yorker. My husband was out of work for almost 2 years before he got a job - in FLORIDA. We are separated now. Why? I WILL NOT LIVE IN THAT CRAZY STATE WITH YOUR INSANE GOVERNOR. Sorry, Floridians, but that is how I feel. I don't give a damn about the sunshine and the weather. I would rather have 2 feet of snow that I have to shovel than live under JEB Bush and all those crazy Fundies there in the Bible Belt. Ship me off to Alaska even, before I will set foot in Florida.

All of this Schiavo fiasco has just confirmed everything I have ever thought about that state.

That is my rant for the day.

19. I think it is refreshing to see a judge
put aside political affiliation and FOLLOW THE LAW. I think what freepers, etc. forget is WHAT THE LAW SAYS (Terri's husband is her guardian). And in the absence of abuse (and there is none) or his choice to relinquish guardianship rights, he will continue to be her guardian and he will continue to make these decisions for her.

As for the national Republican party, I say LET THEM KEEP GOING ON. It's obvious the general public thinks that their intervention was incorrect, and I think this is going to be a wake up call to Americans. Let the Republican Party hang themselves on this so we can prevail in 06 and 08.

Also (sorry for the rant), are there any other married people who are more likely to discuss private matters with their husband than with their parents??? I mean, her and her husband lived together and shared a life together. It makes perfect sense that she would have told him her feelings on life sustaining actions, etc. Just because she was raised Catholic doesn't mean she necessarily followed the religion at age 26 (oh believe me, I would know).

21. From the very people who
"yanked the life" out of so horribly many of the prisoners delivered into their gentle care. Their screaming accusations of "murderer" and "terrorist," especially at a fellow "conservative," ring so hollow.

28. I heard today that Judge Greer was booted
out of the fellowship of the Calvary something Baptist Church in Pinellas.
The minister sent a letter asking Judge Greer NOT to come anymore!!!!

Some "christian" compassion, eh?
