Teacher allegedly helped in drug use

LOWELL -- A former Westford high school teacher accused of selling heroin to teenage girls actually applied a tourniquet to their arms and helped locate a vein so the drug could be injected, according to a court document.

In a statement filed in Middlesex Superior Court, prosecutor Stephen B. Barton alleges that former Westford Academy High School mathematics teacher Rosemarie Pumo "applied a belt as a tourniquet" to the arms of two female Westford students before Shannon Duggan, 18, injected the girls with heroin using dirty needles. Afterward, Pumo and Duggan would inject each other with heroin, the document states.

Now THAT is twisted.

"Westford school officials permitted Pumo, who had taught there for eight years, to maintain health insurance benefits so she could enroll in a drug rehabilitation program shortly after her arrest in February. Westford School Superintendent Stephen Foster declined to comment on the allegation that Pumo helped students use heroin."

I commend those actions.
